MXC: Reed, Beard place top 50

Finishing his fourth Big South championship meet on Oct. 31, senior captain and men’s cross country leader Russell Reed placed 30 out of 78 individually, up 13 spots from the year prior.

Showing progress of his own, sophomore Leon Beard held strong behind Reed and cracked the top 50 for the first time in his career after running nearly two minutes faster than he did last year, finishing as 46 out of 78.

Reed ran the 8K in 26:38.33 while Beard came in less than a minute behind him at 27:28.21.

Junior Johnny Leder landed just outside top 50, coming in 52 out of 78 with a time of 27:51.07.

As a whole, the team ranked No. 9 amongst the 11 Big South teams, ahead of No. 10 Charleston Southern and No. 11 Gardner Webb. Campbell took first place.

Longwood’s season continues with two more meets. The last definite meet of 2015 will be NCAA Southeast Regional 10K, held in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Prior to that meet, Longwood will run at the 3 Stripe Red Shirt Cross Country Invitational in Cary, North Carolina this weekend, Nov. 7.
