Tallying a goal in both halves, the hosting Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) (5-11-0, 2-4-0) sent the Lancers (5-10-0, 2-3-0) home with a 2-0 non-conference loss on Friday, Oct. 23.
Though both teams managed to send the same amount (5) of shots on goal, VCU’s leading scorers, freshman Emily McNamara and sophomore Jamee Albright, notched another two goals, bringing their combined total to 14 this season.
Longwood forced VCU senior goalkeeper Kendall Clifton to make five saves, the majority occurring within the first 35 minutes of the match.
Sophomore forward Edel Nyland started the attack strong for Longwood, sending the first shot on goal of the game during the 7th minute. Nyland finished with four shots overall, two on goal—the most on the team.
Longwood freshman goalkeeper Katie Wyman made her fourth career start and played a full 70 minutes, adding three saves to her season.
Five days prior to playing VCU, Longwood traveled to Athens, Ohio where they lost 5-1 to the University of Ohio.
Currently, Longwood is No. 5 in the Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) standings and needs to move up one more place to participate in the postseason tournament.
With their final MAC game approaching, a win against No. 4 Missouri State University (6-10-0, 3-2-0) would secure a spot in the tournament, a team they won 4-1 against last season.
The Lancers will travel to Missouri State on Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. to decide their fate in their second year being a part of MAC.
