The Student Government Association (SGA) was able to hold open forum and lead discussions at the Tuesday, March 19 meeting, but the Senate could not vote because the minimum amount of members needed in order to do so (quorum) were not present.
This week’s meeting began with a presentation about the upcoming Big Event. The event will occur this Saturday, March 23 at 9:00 a.m. Volunteers will begin work at their respective job sites at 9:30 a.m. and return to campus at 12:30 p.m. for a picnic.
Big Event representatives asked senators and representatives to sign up as job site leaders for the event. There will be a meeting tonight, March 20, at 9 p.m. in Hiner 207 for those leading job sites during the event. To begin open forum, Senior Class President Gina DeMarco said senators interested in voicing their opinions on the SGA’s stance on individual off-campus group members’ participation in recognized groups should be present at the next committee meeting on Monday, March 25 in Lankford Student Union Ballroom at 8:30 p.m..
A senator expressed concerns about the automatic doors of Janet D. Greenwood Library, as students have noticed that they open slowly. Students have also requested that more Farmville Area Buses circulate through Lancer Park in the fall when the North Campus apartments are open.
There were also concerns about golf carts blocking portions of the sidewalk, limiting wheelchair accessibility. Executive Senator Haley Vest said there is a special pathway for these golf carts, and they should not be blocking the general sidewalks.
Auditor Alisha Royal reported that club and organization audits for this year are going well so far and has only five left to complete.
Secretary Steven Sommer said a memorial fund for Longwood student and Theta Chi Fraternity brother Chase Wood is being established.
The Student Finance Committee (SFC) was unable to bring budget requests to the Senate for possible allocation because of the SGA’s aforementioned lack of quorum at the meeting. These allocations will have to be voted on at the next meeting.
All students have received an email with a Google Doc application for those interested in applying for a position on the SGA as a senator or Honor Board or Conduct Board representative. The application is due by March 27 at 5 p.m. Those running for any of these positions must attend a meeting on March 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Lankford Student Union Ballroom.
Dr. Tim Pierson, vice president for Student Affairs and faculty adviser to the SGA, reported that the plans for the university’s new student center are progressing. There will be a presentation on the center during Friday’s Board of Visitors meeting. There will also be discussion about the requirements for off-campus living.
The SGA was unable to technically adjourn this week’s meeting because this must be voted upon. The adjournment of this week’s meeting and the start of next week’s meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 26 at 3:45 p.m. in the BC rooms of Lankford Student Union.
