With a country-wide decline in COVID-19 cases from 5,487,364 cases on February 12, 2022, to 226,618 on March 1, 2023, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends vaccination against COVID-19 but there is no mask requirement. This also includes testing if presenting symptoms and isolation to be done on a case-by-case basis. This means that universities are taking different approaches to COVID-19 policies.

Imagine: you’ve been tasked with writing a new horror/comedy movie. But what can you do to make it unique? Being inspired by true events can help, but lots of movies claim that these days. You could make the threat an animal, after all, “Jaws” was popular. But an animal going around killing people for no reason is also an old trope that goes back ages. You need something to make it stand out from movies of yore. *Snaps fingers.* You get it high.

Opening in October of 1980, Willett Hall then named Lancer Hall featured many amenities to increase the quality of campus life at Longwood College. These amenities included a pool, dance studio, classrooms, and the all-important gym that served as the home of the Longwood Lancers. Sitting on Pine Street, which at the time ran straight through campus, it became an integral part of the campus. As campus has grown and changed, Lancer Hall, now known as Willett Hall, has grown with it.

Ghost Face slashes the March box office with the sixth installment of the slasher-horror Scream film franchise. According to Collider, “Scream VI” “exceeded expeditions in its opening week,” setting a franchise record at the domestic box office to $44 million. This surpassed the former Scream 4’s $34 million domestic box office opening weekend revenue. This installment of the nearly 30-year-old series is a direct sequel to 2022’s “Scream,” the self-proclaimed “requel” of the beloved horror franchise. That said, “Scream VI” is not done yet. At the time of writing, the film is looking to cement its place in the longstanding series. With current global revenue at $116 million, it is making short work of its predecessor’s global gross revenue of $137 million.

The 2022 film “M3GAN” was one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. The story follows Gemma (Allison Williams), a designer for a toy company whose next big project is M3GAN - a life-like doll powered by artificial intelligence whose purpose is to be a child’s best friend. The more you interact with her, the more she learns and serves as a friend, teacher, and protector. When Gemma becomes the caretaker of her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), this seems like the perfect opportunity for her to test out her latest product.

The process of recruiting international students has some of the same processes that recruiting domestic students have. The Office of International Admissions and Recruitment looks for a market of students to recruit for the upcoming semester. This market mainly focuses on students who can afford to pay tuition. “We are looking for students that can afford it because they don’t get any more scholarships and they pay out-of-state tuition,” Patricia Trent, Executive Director for the Center of Global Engagement said.

The Student Government Association has been making strides to help the University Diversity Council (UDC) reach the goals outlined in their five-year strategic plan. Executive Senator Davice Jones, Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee Chair for SGA, has been working closely with the Office of Multicultural Affairs on several points of this Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan of the University put into place by the UDC. Jones says that in the past Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts have “not been our priority and it should be.” A large step in prioritizing these initiatives was the creation of the DEI Committee Chair position by previous SGA President, Anne Patterson. Being the first one to fill this position, Jones says “I’ve learned a lot on how to help people and boost their voices,” as she paves the way for all who step into her position following her term.

In 1975, the rock band Television convinced Hilly Kristal, owner of legendary NYC music club CBGBs, to allow rock artists to perform on their stage. After this Television, Patti Smith, Blondie, and Talking Heads became regular performers at the club. Then-unknown “street rock” outfit Ramones opened for Television that same year. Street rock became punk rock, and a new musical era was born.

January 15, 2023, saw the release of HBO’s live action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s award-winning video game series “The Last of Us.” The show so far has been met with praise from both fans of the games, newcomers to the series, and critics and praise that I personally feel is deserved. From the set-production, videography, and acting “The Last of Us” has been a phenomenal show and remained consistent throughout its run so far. Pedro Pascal being the standout in my eyes, as he adds layers to Joel we haven’t seen in the game and brings a sense of vulnerability that was never shown. While the show has been mostly faithful in its adaptation of the game, there have been changes, ranging from small locations to whole new storylines being added. Episode three being the standout as the whole episode is dedicated to two minor characters from the game being Bill and Frank. A whole article could be written about episode three, but even though this isn’t a review I highly implore everyone to watch episode three, it’s in my eye’s perfect storytelling.

Longwood’s theater production’s rendition of the comedic tragedy “Crimes of the Heart” was both a joy to watch and a significant improvement from their last performance “Much Ado about Nothing.” With spectacular performances from the six actors, wonderful staging from the production crew, and a beautiful set design, that not only took my breath away, but really places you in this 1970’s era home in the Mississippi countryside. The production should be considered a remarkable success and should bring pride to those who contributed to its creation.

It has been nearly four months since the C.H.A.N.G.E. coalition met with President Taylor Reveley IV in the N.H. Scott Multicultural Center for an hours-long conversation about their open letter and list of demands. Since that meeting, there has been an interaction with key members of the Board of Visitors, a protest at the most recent meeting of the Board, and more conversations at the SGA about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. All of this has spurred conversations between students and administration officials on the ‘Longwood Experience’ for students and faculty/staff members of color. Two of these officials, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Larissa Smith and Vice President of Student Affairs Cam Patterson (‘10, ‘17), have been in the room for it all and spoke to The Rotunda on what the next steps are going forward.

Many people, myself included, were excited to see what the next generation of Pokémon could bring especially after the release of Legends Arceus. The games were announced to be the series’ first step into open world, a request fans had been asking for years. We had gotten a feel of what an open world Pokémon game would be like with Legends Arceus having its open zone areas and Sword and Shields with its wild areas. Although, those were just a taste of what a fully open world Pokémon game would be like.

Coming off a 4-13 record in 2021, the expectations for the New York Giants were low. So incredibly low that even projecting a sub-6-win season in 2022 labeled you an “optimist living in New York.” The firings of Head Coach Joe Judge, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham left doubt about the future, but one thing was certain. The Giants were officially entering an era of rebuilding. Giants owner John Mara would spend little time finding his Head Coach, hiring former Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll just 3 weeks after an unsuccessful 2021 season. As a fan, I loved this pick. The Giants had been bad for nearly a decade now, and I was exhausted. Daboll embodies hard-nosed football with a bit of swagger which is exactly what I thought New York was lacking.

The DC Extended Universe, or DCEU, is nearing its end. The fate of the cinematic universe of brooding antiheroes, bubbly crusaders, and somewhat heroic supervillains was confirmed in Dec. 2022 by Warner Brothers Discovery (WBD). There had been concerns over the state of the DCEU earlier in the past year when it was announced that the HBOMax streaming exclusive, “Batgirl”, had been canceled despite almost being completed, due to the CEO of WBD David Zaslav having little faith in the project turning a profit. After the exit of Walter Hamada, in part due to the cancellation of “Batgirl”, Peter Safran and James Gunn were named as co-CEOs of DC Studios, a division of WBD, and answerable directly to Zaslav. Safran, a producer and manager of some note for his association with “The Conjuring”franchise, will primarily focus on the production and financing of films and television series for DC Films. While Gunn, who served as both writer and director for “The Suicide Squad”and “Peacemaker”, will be primarily concerned with the creative side of the division, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
