On August 10, 2023, Dr. David Magill, chair of the Longwood English department, and Dr. Sean Barry, an associate professor for the Longwood English department, led a faculty development session on teaching with artificial intelligence. Magill said the purpose of the development session was to go over what this technology is, how it functions, and how it affects the teaching of writing.

In late August, Angela Comer was announced as Longwood University’s new Chief of Police by Cameron Patterson, Vice President of Student Affairs. Following a nationwide search held by the department, Comer was chosen due to her commitment to putting others first. During the lengthy interview process, she met with the police chiefs of other universities in Virginia and was commended for her “impeccable” record, according to the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. She believes in community partnership over policy. She stated to Longwood, “In many ways, this position represents the reasons I got into law enforcement in the first place: the opportunity to affect lives in a positive way, to be an integral part in making a safe community, and the opportunity to mentor and educate.”

On August 26, the Farmville Downtown Partnership and The Yeatman Group hosted Rock the Block, a community event that aims to bring both college students and the Farmville community together. However, students and locals did not expect Oliver Anthony, legally named Christopher Lunsford, a Billboard-breaking musician, to make an appearance Saturday afternoon.

Volume 3, Issue 6 of The Rotunda (Nov. 11, 1922) is the first reference to “senior installation,” in which 15 of the 17 members of the Senior class were “installed” by then-President Joseph Jarman. In that ceremony, Seniors processed in donning gowns and had their caps placed on their heads by Jarman.

Longwood University recently received a grant totaling $568,000 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for a program that addresses the mental health resource desert in the Southside area. The project, titled the Southside Campus and Community Collaborative for Mental Health Awareness (SCCC-MHA), will establish a mental health training and referral program through partnerships with the goal of increasing mental health services and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health within the community.

As Taylor Swift declared in social media posts before the opening night of "The Eras Tour," she's in her “Eras era.” Swift announced her third re-recorded album, "Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)," on Night 1 of her "Eras Tour" stop in Nashville, Tennessee - confirming months of speculation from fans that a third re-recording was on the way. In between the announcement on May 5 and its release on July 7, Swift also released "Midnights (Til Dawn Edition)" with a remix of "Karma" featuring Ice Spice, and promoted "Cruel Summer" (from “Lover”) to pop radio as the 5th single from that album.

Genesis Owusu, born Kofi Owusu-Ansah, is a Ghanaian-Australian artist that has recently been making serious waves in his home country. His 2021 debut album, “Smiling With No Teeth,” released to widespread critical acclaim. Even a brief look into him will reveal he has won dozens of awards from a variety of Australian organizations ranging from the Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards to the Rolling Stone Australia Awards. His song “Gold Chains” even appeared on Former President Barack Obama’s 2021 year end playlist. Despite all this, his notoriety in the states remains minimal. This is why when I heard he’d be opening for Paramore on May 23rd in Charlotte, North Carolina, I had to be there.

Willett Hall has been a staple on Longwood University’s campus since 1980, and it has been the home to Kinesiology, Therapeutic Recreation, and other Health related majors along with their respected students. However, to most Longwood students who are not a part of any of these majors, Willett Hall is the home of Lancer Basketball. Although Willett Hall has the charm of a smaller university, the basketball program has grown immensely, and Longwood has outgrown the quaint gym.

On the weekend of March 17th, fliers were discovered on the top three floors of Rotunda Hall featuring “A skull with a crown and “The Rooks” - per Lt. R. Stuart Raybold, the Interim Director of Public Safety at LUPD. In addition, there was a mask taped over the Joan of Arc at Domremy statue, affectionately called “Joanie on the Stonie” by Longwood students. This mask damaged the statue, ripping off paint and jeopardizing her role at Longwood’s commencement.

With multicultural clubs and organizations garnering more attention on campus, such as AFROH’s Spring Weekend Culture Couture Fashion Show, and C.H.A.N.G.E. officially gaining cohort status in the Student Government Association, increased awareness concerning issues of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility has come with that attention.

There are around 580 students that are members of a sorority or fraternity on Longwood’s campus according to Julie Ramsey, the Director of Fraternity and Sorority life (FSL). At the time of writing, nine of those 580 members made up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). The NPHC houses the Divine Nine sororities and fraternities. These organizations consist of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. Of these organizations, six of them are recognized on campus, but only four of these organizations are currently active on campus. These organizations are Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, and Delta Sigma Theta.

On April 27, Longwood University will hold their first ever Lavender Graduation, a celebration of LGBTQ+ students for their achievements and unique additions to campus culture. Not even a month later, several of those same students will be in a crowd listening as a legislator who actively worked to remove their civil rights speaks to them from a stage.

Longwood University employees recently received a mass email regarding a change in beverage vendors on campus. The email, issued by the Office of Administration and Finance on March 24, announced that Longwood and Pepsi have signed a long-term beverage vendor contract. Pepsi will be investing in campus development through multiple avenues including athletics, campus marketing, and sustainability efforts.

Shentel, the current internet provider at Longwood, is reassessing connections and access points in residence halls and managed apartments due to connectivity issues. Shentel has been around since 1902 offering broadband internet, digital TV, high-speed internet, and phone services to its consumers. They have extended these services to Longwood residence halls as well as other companies in the mid-Atlantic area.

According to new data by the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV), Longwood University’s undergraduate enrollment from fall 2021 to fall 2022 decreased from 3,485 to 3,154, a loss of 331 students. This rate is down from the fall 2020 to fall 2021 when the institution’s undergraduate enrollment decreased from 3,940 to 3,485, a loss of 455 students.

Substance Abuse, while an issue seldom discussed on many college campuses, is one that affects many in the Longwood and Farmville Community. Living spaces, safe spaces, recovery meetings, and other support systems don’t adequately exist for many who desperately need them to maintain healthy living; whether that means strict abstinence, moderation, or another type of sobriety.
