After voting unanimously to enter an Intergovernmental Service Agreement (IGSA) with the Department of Homeland Security and a subcontracting agreement with Abyon, LLC. on March 12, the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors has faced criticism over their vote from legal groups, activists, and advocates – including Longwood students – citing human rights concerns and the activists’ belief the Board of Supervisors violated the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

Longwood Men’s Basketball were crowned champions of the Big South Conference after a thumping win over UNC Asheville 85-59 in High Point, North Carolina. In a season where things looked rather bleak at times, including a 6-10 record in conference play, Longwood now looks forward to playing on the national stage.

According to Longwood Dean of Students Jen Fraley, Longwood University’s Administration will look to change its electric scooters and personal transportation device policy before the end of the semester – addressing a large uptick in scooter usage last year and a number of incidents around campus. That said, Fraley ruled out any “sweeping changes” to the current policy.

Following several months of delays and setbacks, the U.S. Department of Education unveiled its long-awaited new FAFSA form in December 2023. However, the release was not without its challenges, causing complications that have left prospective students uncertain about their financial aid status. Due to these changes, Longwood University Admissions has been put under pressure to alleviate these concerns and get information out to these prospective students as soon as possible.

This past summer, Longwood Athletics enlisted previous Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Student Services, Hannah Ledger, to be appointed for a new role: Senior Associate Athletics Director for Mental Health and Wellness. This new role is leaving a lot of questions from students and staff, as Ledger and the rest of the Longwood Athletics team take this semester to understand what it might entail.

Longwood men’s basketball pulled off a stunning upset that will likely etch itself in Longwood folklore. On Saturday, March 9, a sold-out and hostile crowd at High Point University saw Longwood pull out a one-point victory against their home team – meaning the Lancers will now play for the Big South Conference title on Sunday.

Longwood’s Men’s Basketball has seen a season full of twists and turns. Through a non-conference schedule that was widely considered to be one of the weakest in all of Division I, the Lancers were able to show their depth and excel in a part of the season that gets frequently overlooked. The non-conference schedule was a success, but that didn’t equate to a good start in Big South play. Over time, Longwood found their footing in a season that.

The Longwood Women’s basketball season is coming to a close in just a few days. With the Big South Conference tournament kicking off on March 6, the Women Lancers have to string some wins together to gain momentum for the tournament. Through a highly demanding non-conference schedule, which included the likes of Clemson University and James Madison University, the Lancers did not get off to the start they wanted. In the conference schedule, the Lancers have been able to show their quality. Though this season was rough at the start, fans have something to look forward to now with some conference wins under their belt.

Longwood men’s basketball were back at home after their road triumph against Presbyterian. Against one of toughest teams in the conference, UNC Asheville, the Lancers picked up a narrow win in front of a raucous Joan Perry Brock Center. With just a few games left, the Lancers need to find a way to keep their good form going.

On Wednesday, February 14, Longwood students and activists from immigration advocacy coalition Free Them All VA once again demonstrated at the Farmville Town Council advocating the shutdown of the Immigration Centers of America (ICA) Farmville Detention Center. This demonstration comes as the Town of Farmville will exit its agreement with ICA on March 29, 2024, according to Farmville Mayor Brian Vincent.

Longwood men’s basketball were in action Wednesday, February 7 against the Spartans of USC Upstate. In a tight conference battle that swung in both directions in the second half, a late flurry of fouls committed by the Lancers, USC Upstate pulled away and won the game 69-64. This would just pile on the misery for a Lancer team that is now sitting in last place in the Big South Conference.

In a highly competitive Big South Conference, any team can win on any given night. Since the conference is such a toss-up, Longwood will have to show grit and determination to grab the league by the scruff of the neck. After winning last time out against Presbyterian, the Lancers were pitted against the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs on January 24. Though Gardner-Webb was not favored to win the game, they stormed out to an early lead and never looked back. In a 76-64 win, the Runnin’ Bulldogs set a new Big South Record for three-point percentage with 92.3% of 12-13 from deep.
