At the end of that sorrowful day, almost 3,000 Americans were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In post 9/11 war operations, over 7,000 U.S. service members were killed in action.

At Longwood University, citizen leaders give back to the community in many different ways. From picking up pieces of trash off the side of the road to donating old clothes and cans of food to places like Elwood’s Cabinet, student organizations like Alpha Phi Omega have committed to helping others through service that stretches across campus, the Farmville community, and the nation. Members of Alpha Phi Omega continue to dedicate themselves to community service during their recruitment season.

It was a hot Friday afternoon in August, students were lined up all around the perimeter of Stubbs Lawn, waiting for their wristbands that they would trade for scarves following the timeless Longwood tradition known as the greatest athletic march ever, or the G.A.M.E. for short. That is, of course, was what they thought would happen. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the G.A.M.E. was happening in-person for the first time in two years, but Mother Nature had other plans. Students were told that due to inclimate weather, the scarves would be given out outside of the Upchurch Student Union and that the march would not occur despite it still being sunny in Farmville, which caused much confusion.

Stubbs Hall on Longwood University’s campus is home to many students who are members of Greek life. Stubbs Hall not only serves as a residence hall for students who are apart of sorority life, but also as a common place for various chapters to reside. There is a total of ten chapter rooms in Stubbs Hall, and Alpha Beta Psi (ABY) was lucky enough to acquire one.

Chad Oxendine first used playing baseball as an excuse to not work on the tobacco farm as a child. Now, he returns to Longwood as the baseball head coach. After 16 years, he finally gets a chance to prove himself at the helm.

In her four years at Longwood, Sydney Backstrom has established herself as one of the top pitchers in the Big South. She currently leads the conference in opposing batting average, innings pitched, wins, and is second in strikeouts. She has been the latest in a long line of exceptional pitchers to come through the Longwood softball program, and currently has her team in third place in the Big South.

Hampden-Sydney College’s Department of Public Safety and Police wants Longwood University Police Department (LUPD) to join a Records Management System (RMS) system to make accessing crime reports easier for both stations. RMS is a system in which officials from Farmville Police Department, Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office and Hampden-Sydney College’s Department of Public Safety and Police use to view crime reports made by their own or a separate department. By not having the same system as the other departments in the area, LUPD is an outlier in the Farmville policing community.

After losing to Campbell in the Big South tournament semifinals, the Longwood women’s basketball team was left with the uncertainty of not knowing if they would receive a postseason tournament bid or not. Fortunately, they were granted an invitation to compete in the Women’s Basketball Invitational, their first tournament appearance under head coach Rebecca Tillett. They were scheduled to take on Loyola Chicago in the opening round on Friday, March 19. Unfortunately, due to a positive COVID case within the team, they were unable to attend the tournament.

It’s a story that has played out many times throughout history: the underdog defying the odds to defeat an opponent thought to be superior. Last Saturday, the Longwood softball team faced that same challenge when they traveled to take on #16 Georgia. The odds were made steeper by the fact that Georgia had defeated them by a score of 10-2 the day prior.
