The men’s soccer team are looking to start their season strong in the fall after a lot of hard work that the team has put into the offseason.
Head coach Jon Atkinson talked about the goal of the team during the season and how it is different than the playing season.
“The spring brings a lot of personal development and growth bringing a team closer together,” said Atkinson.
Even with the season over, the lancers were busy and played scrimmages against other teams.
“Sometimes we play double headers, so we maximize our time and value.”
The Lancers finished their scrimmages against other schools with a record of 4-1-1.
This included the last game against the University of Lynchburg in which the team successfully kept a clean sheet away.
Coach Atkinson explained how using the off-season is an effective way of utilizing how he chooses what players start.
“Your thoughts on the team are constantly being molded based on what we see predominantly from practice, which is majority of the time,” said Atkinson.
“One of the most important semesters our guys are going face is going be the summer. There’s a very limited time to blend the team,” said Atkinson
“It’s going be very important for the guys to take the individual growth themselves in the summer, and plug it to teams around the country, and understand the physical requirements this level dictates,” said Atkinson.
“These guys are probably going be more experienced in a comfortability with one another, ” said Atkinson.
On top of Spring being a time to improve fitness and technicalities of the game, Atkinson talked about how it is also a time for the team to grow closer together.
“What we’re looking from our team is to blend, bond, and grow with each and learn with each other. That familiarity of each other will allow a better product to come in time, and that what Spring is about,” said Atkinson.
