Redshirt junior guard Isaiah Walton has been dismissed from the Longwood University men’s basketball program due to academic issues, according to a press release issued by the Longwood athletics communications office Jan. 31.
The decision by Head Coach Griff Aldrich comes just one day after Walton was suspended for “failure to meet team expectations.”
“We are saddened with today’s announcement,” Aldrich said in the press release. “We are striving to develop young men who realize growth academically, athletically and personally. This requires each individual within the program to be committed in the classroom and focusing on each of these areas – not simply being an athlete.”
Walton finishes his season averaging 17.8 points-per-game in 15 appearances, and most notably scored his 1,000th point in his career earlier in January. He leaves the program 17th all-time in scoring with 1,104 points.
The versatile guard, recruited by former Head Coach Jayson Gee, was known for his one-on-one play and his mid-range game. He recorded 20 or more points eight times this season, even after missing eight games in November and December.
“We wish Isaiah the absolute best as he enters the next phase of his career,” Aldrich concluded in the press release.
According to Vice President of Athletics Communications Chris Cook, there is no further statement regarding Walton’s dismissal. The Lancers move forward and prepare to face Big South heavyweight Campbell University on Saturday Feb. 2 at 3:00 p.m.
Redshirt junior guard Isaiah Walton ends his career shortly after breaking the 1,000-point mark, becoming the 17th player in Longwood history to do so.
