In his first major decision as new Longwood men’s basketball head coach, Griff Aldrich is retaining the services of current assistant coach Dr. Ron Bradley, Director of Athletics Troy Austin confirmed Thursday, April 5.
Bradley will become Aldrich’s first staff hire since he being named head coach on March 22. There has yet to be a hire outside of the Longwood basketball program.
According to Austin, Aldrich has met with all the current assistant coaches of the program, but has only confirmed Bradley’s return. The statuses of associate head coach Jake Luhn, assistant coach Cody Anderson and Director of Operations Chris Moore remain unknown.
“(Aldrich) is still interviewing for the other coaching positions,” Austin said. “We’re still in that process.”
He added Aldrich is still discussing whether he will retain the three other coaches or go in a different direction.
A 2010 Big South Conference Hall of Fame inductee and coaching veteran, Bradley joined the Lancers staff as an assistant coach in July 2016. He served as Radford’s head coach from 1991-2002, before spending the next 14 seasons at James Madison, Clemson and DePaul as an associate head coach.
Bradley has been a staff member of 10 NCAA Division I Basketball tournament teams throughout his illustrious career, including five at Maryland, three at Clemson and one at Radford running the helm.
Additionally, he remains the all-time winningest head coach in Radford basketball history, holding an overall record of 193-124.
The confirmation of his return solidifies his position within the program for years to come, as he's set to enter his third season with Longwood, and his 37th year of coaching at the Division I level.
Austin said completing his coaching staff is listed as Aldrich’s second priority, behind meeting this years’ team and assessing his roster.
In the midst of the live recruiting period, Austin said Aldrich will be traveling and recruiting potential prospects to the program and attempting to have prospects recommit, which may potentially delay any other staff hirings or announcements.
