Cardi B has to be one of the most beloved and the most hated musical artists out right now. With her hit song “Bodak Yellow,” she has been labeled a one hit wonder by music fans and critics. However, she has found relevance by performing on songs with 21 Savage, Migos and Bruno Mars.
Cardi B’s success story is amazing. From being a stripper to a reality tv character to becoming an artist, Cardi B went through a lot before she became as popular as she is now.
In comes her debut album, “Invasion of Privacy,” which features some pretty interesting artists from Chance the Rapper to spanish artists Bad Bunny and J. Balvin. So did Cardi B’s debut album deliver? The answer is, surprisingly yes. She provides some greats beats and the featured artists on her album really mesh well together.
Invasion of Privacy starts off with the song “Get Up 10”, which is based on her rise to fame. She states that she “Used to dance in a club right across from my school / I said ‘dance’ not ‘fuck’, don’t get confused.” This part is followed by a slow and melodic piano playing in the back with her also talking about the rags part of her rags to riches story.
Then the beat switches to a hard knock trap beat to brag about how popular her songs are and the riches that she has received. Cardi has basically followed the “Dreams to Nightmares” song structure with this track. Which isn’t bad, if the beat was at least different.
The next song is “Drip,” with popular group Migos and its a decent song at best. It has the “Migos curse” which means that Migos basically takes over the whole track with Cardi B only having one voice.
The beat is an average trap beat with a little bit of flute playing in the background. No verses really stand out besides “took a bitch to Piccadilly (splash) / Water in my ear, gave a n*gga wet willy,” which is a really funny lyric. It still did not make this song worth it, but it’ll be around house parties and clubs everywhere.
One of the cooler tracks is “Best Life” with Chance the Rapper, which is an interesting combination. However, Chance has to be the best feature of this project, with his rapping style and flow matching really well together.
This song talks about their lavish lives with mentions of their cars, money and their musical successes. Chance mentions that “You don’t like money, I can see it in your eye / You don’t like winnin’, I can see it in your tie,” which is basically saying that the subject doesn’t like succeeding like Chance does.
Overall, this song is really enjoyable and Chance delivers to make this one of the best songs on the album.
Cardi B then comes with “I like It” which has her rapping over a Spanish trap beat. This track talks about her Latino heritage and all it has to offer. Cardi says that she’s “bout my coins like Mario” which is a money reference. It also features Bad Bunny and J. Balvin, providing some good singing to spice the song up a little bit.
Overall, Cardi B does deliver in this album. Her lyrics, the beats she chose and the featured artists make this album really enjoyable. Cardi B still has a ways to go in her career to make an album better than this, but at least she’s on the right track. 3/5
