SGA Brief: Nov. 29

In the Nov. 29 Student Government Association (SGA) meeting, Dr. Larissa Fergeson, professor of history and associate provost for outreach programs and initiatives, presented an outline of the new core curriculum that would commence for the upcoming freshmen of Fall 2018.

The SGA members then had the opportunity to ask questions in regard to how many classes students would need to take in comparison to the current general education program.

Many senators spoke out with concern over how the new curriculum would transition from the current curriculum but were excited for the upcoming freshman to partake.

The core curriculum was passed in the Faculty Senate meeting on Nov. 3. The new core curriculum will be voted on by the Board of Visitors on Dec. 2.

Mikayla Faughnan, vice-president of Phi Sigma Pi, and Kelsey Norton, president of Phi Sigma Pi, attended the meeting to request the approval of Phi Sigma Pi's constitution.

Faughnan and Norton gave a description of their organization, mentioning that Phi Sigma Pi is an honors fraternity, which was founded in 1916 that provides leadership, scholarships and services for students to become a better citizen in the Longwood community. The fraternity is passionate to ensure academic success and brotherhood. To be accepted in Phi Sigma Pi, one would have to maintain a 3.0 GPA or more.

The SGA approved the constitution of Phi Sigma Pi.

The SDIC (Student Diversity and Inclusion Council), BSA (Black Students Association) and SEAL (Student Educators for Active Leadership) requested the allocations of $6,000 to the Social Justice and Action Leadership Summit and $3,000 for MLK Celebration Week that is set to occur in early Jan.

The SGA approved both allocations.

The SGA approved the reallocation for Alternative Breaks to fund two trips in spring 2017 in the amount of $4,500.

The SGA approved the allocation of $7,060 for Relay for Life that will be held in March 2017 to fund for music, sound, police support and programming.

The next SGA meeting will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 17 in the Martinelli Board Room in Maugans Alumni Center at 3:45 p.m.
