“The Accountant” is a pretty crazy movie and though admittedly, we didn't know what was going on for half of the film, it was great.
Ben Affleck plays Christian Wolfe, an accountant that's lived a unique and intriguing life using his incredible intelligence to manage finances for rich and dangerous criminals as well as organizations.
Christian's talents didn't come from studying, but from his severe autism that makes him smart enough to review 15 years of a corporation's spending and earnings in a night- but unable to hold a normal conversation.
This movie can be called anything but normal, because it is definitely one of the strangest films we've seen in a while, but we do like to judge films by how engaged they kept us throughout the run time, and “The Accountant” was able to do that very well, balancing five different plot lines continuously without things becoming too jumbled to follow.
This film is able to keep you guessing because it never reveals too much of its intricate story. No matter what aspect is being focused on, the viewer is always left with questions as each plot line is just as interesting and crucial to the story as the last.
The film poses the question "Do you like puzzles?" as an obvious allusion, because watching “The Accountant” is like putting together a puzzle. You study different pieces scattered in front of you, test where their smallest parts connect, and rack your brain until you've stared at it so long that it becomes obvious and everything is made clear.
Films like The Accountant make us love movies. It was entertaining but challenging, all the while complicated yet far from boring.
Seeing Christian through a window covered in sprawling equations feels like the closest thing to understanding what's happening in his head. He knows that you're staring at him, but he's too focused on the numbers.
