Longwood Golf Course will no longer be open to public use after June 30 this year.
The 9-hole course will instead be used to host practices for the university’s golf teams, as well as an area for the cross-county teams and physical education classes to use.
According to a press release from the university, the employees currently staffed at the course will continue to work at the university.
In the release, Dr. Tim Pierson, the vice president for Student Affairs, provided a statement regarding the current membership of the golf course.
“With the availability of other courses nearby, public use of the Longwood course has declined over the past decade in particular. Membership now stands at under 100, including about a dozen Longwood students. But the decision is not a financial one. Golf is a great lifelong sport, and we want to support it and encourage students to play,” said Pierson.
There are two other courses in the area, The Manor and the municipal course. Both of these courses are open to the public.
Justin Pope, chief of staff in the President’s Office, stated that students are able to play at The Manor for the same price, and that all lessons and classes will continue at that course. Faculty and staff will also be able to play for the same price.
Pope continued to state that the “impact on the students should be minimal, but we certainly recognize this facility has been important to the community.”
