Dear Alice,
I’ve been at Longwood University for a whole semester and I still feel like I don’t know my surroundings well or have many friends outside of my suite. How do I branch out?
Sincerely, Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
One of the best ways to get involved on campus is to become a member of an organization or club that sparks your interest. By becoming a member of a few clubs, you will be able to meet people that you have things in common with. By looking up “Longwood University Clubs and Organizations” and clicking on the “Get Involved” link on the right hand side of the page you will be able to view the abundance of clubs that are available. I would also suggest getting a member from your suite to go with you to the first meeting because you may feel more comfortable branching out if you have a friend by your side.
Also, make sure that you check out the weekly email that gets sent to all students; it explains what will be happening on campus over the weekend and following week. There are always events that you can attend from sports games to benefit concerts.
If you are too busy to fully commit to an organization at the present time, find a place to volunteer on campus. Then you can spend an hour or two helping the community. This can serve as a way of meeting like-minded people who think the volunteering is as important as you do.
Sincerely, Alice
