Family Fun and Magic Equals a Fantastic Weekend

Perfect weather, clear skies and family visits added together to make a great weekend. This past weekend, Longwood hosted their annual Family Weekend where students and families were reunited for a time of exploration, fun and food. My parents came up for the weekend and were able to experience Rock the Block, as well as the activities of the weekend.

Starting off the weekend right, my parents and I had the continental breakfast at the Lankford Student Union. We talked about how my first month of school was going so far. I told them about how classes were going well, that I made some friends and how I was becoming involved in a few different clubs and organizations.

Much to our excitement, we quickly realized that Saturday was filled with many fun and interesting activities. There were multiple workshops for the whole family, including a presentation of the History of Longwood University, an art hunt and a study abroad session.

First, we headed to the ABC rooms of the Student Union where we listened to Dr. Jordan’s presentation on the history of Longwood University. Dr. Jordan was as entertaining as ever.

Throughout the presentation he passed around artifacts that have been found on the grounds of the school. Afterwards, we were provided with a fantastic picnic lunch, where we were able to enjoy some grilled chicken sandwiches, steak, fried Oreos and snow cones, as well as watch some of the talent amongst the students. Families talked and interacted with each other as they played outside games on Stubbs lawn, such as giant checkers and chess, corn hole, ladder golf and Frisbee.

After playing some games, my family and I sat in on the study abroad information session and then decided to explore a little bit of downtown Farmville. We ended up doing some shopping at Wal-Mart and Pairets, which was abnormally open due to it being Family Weekend.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a pleasant dinner at the Shogun Steakhouse, a Japanese restaurant, nearby. We also went to see the amazing magician Mike “Super,” who did a fantastic job entertaining the audience. The audience loved his jokes and his act was even more spectacular.

Jacob Burton, a freshman, and participant in Mike “Super’s” final act, said that the show was his favorite part of Family Weekend.

On Sunday, we went to worship at the New Life Church where we participated in College Sunday and heard the head coach of Longwood’s very own men’s basketball program, Jayson Gee, give an encouraging message about his eldest son, Brandon. Finally, we ended our weekend with lunch at the local Buffalo Wild Wings, ending another great Family Weekend.

While the weekend was short, and before I knew it, my family had to hit the road, it was still wonderful to see them. I really enjoyed being able to bring them around my new home, and show them all of the wonderful things Longwood and Farmville have to offer.
