29 Years of Sigma: The Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Invite You to Help Celebrate 29 Years on Longwood’s Campus

History was made on the campus of Longwood University on Oct. 10, 1984 by seven minority male students. These students, Thurman Richards, Novey Wiley, Reginald Thompson, Gary Cason, Timothy Walker, Gary Callis and Albert Van Graves, would come together to charter the first National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) fraternity on the campus of what was then known as Longwood College. The fraternity would be Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and the chapter would be known as the Omicron Rho.

When these men came together to charter this organization, little did they know that 29 years later the organization would still be going strong and be home to leaders in organizations and offices such as B.A.S.I.C., Residential and Commuter Life, the Peer Health Educators and the Compass Community.

The brothers who now reside in the chapter have and will continue to push to live up to the ideals of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service and work hard to spread these ideals throughout the Longwood and Farmville communities.

Throughout this calendar year, the chapter has done numerous service projects and hosted a variety of programs ranging from tax awareness tips and tricks to trips to the local Moton Museum.

The brothers are also striving to run workshops for preteen males in the surrounding areas and will be hosting their annual Sleep Out for the Homeless program on Nov. 23 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

This Thursday, Oct. 10, the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. would like to invite the campus to join them on Brock Commons, in front of the Lankford Student Union, as they celebrate the 29th anniversary of the chapter like never before with a step routine at 5:14 p.m. It is encouraged that all students come out and learn more about Phi Beta Sigma and the National Pan Hellenic Council on Longwood’s campus.
