The Longwood women’s lacrosse team has cooled off a bit since their red-hot start to the 2013 season, losing twice in the past week. The week began with a 13-8 road-loss to conference foe High Point before the Lancers (7-5, 2-2 Big South) returned home to play William & Mary and overcame a second-half deficit to win 12-10. Yesterday, LU took a ten-goal home-loss to the Naval Academy.

Against High Point, an 8-4 halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome for the somewhat young Lancer team, as Lauren Prasnicki continued her run as the team’s leading point scorer with five assists. Jamie Brentlinger, Katie McHugh and Sarah Butler had two goals each. Mackenzie Carroll had a game-high four markers for the Panthers, who were picked to win the Big South at the start of the year and are tied at the top of the conference standings with Davidson at 2-0 in the Big South.

It was a different story against William & Mary, though, as LU took maybe their most exciting win of the season, so far. Brentlinger had the game’s opening tally, firing one past Tribe goalie Colleen Nofi 1:08 into the contest. The game was tied four times after that and the lead changed hands twice, with Longwood taking the lead for good with Butler scoring an unassisted goal with 15:42 left.

W&M scored twice in 25 seconds to put it within one, but Longwood withstood the rally as McHugh and Brentlinger added insurance markers late to put the game out of reach. Christian Acker played no small role in the victory, saving ten Tribe shots. W&M went just 2-for-8 when it came to free position shots, with Acker no doubt contributing to that number.

Against No. 12 Navy yesterday, the team had a respectable .643 shooting percentage —including an 8-for-8 first half — as McHugh had a hat trick, but the Midshipmen overpowered the Lancers, 19-9. Statistically, it wasn’t all bad for Longwood as they were 3-for-4 from free position shots and retrieved 20 ground balls compared to Navy’s 21. However, it was Loren Generi who did the damage for Navy, scoring a staggering eight goals on 15 shots attempted. Kathy Young, Amy Gennaro and Jasmine DePompeo had three each for the Midshipmen, as well.

Coming up for LU is a home game against Coastal Carolina on Friday at 3 p.m. After that, it’s on to Virginia Tech of the ACC next Wednesday. Prasnicki leads the team in points and assists (16g-33a), while Brentlinger leads the team in goals with 31.
