Singing a Sweet Song Will Free The Convicted in 'Grimm'

“He sang a sweet song in tones so full and soft that no human ear could resist them, nor fathom their origin.” This is the quote from the Grimm brothers that opens this exciting new episode of the hit TV show “Grimm.” Instead of introducing a new kind of Wesen, this episode deals with two that the audience has previously met. Episode 17 of season two, “One Angry Fuchsbau” begins six months earlier with a murder.

Rosalee (Bree Turner), who has now become a permanent character on the show, is on jury duty for this trial where a ziegevolk is the defense lawyer of a fuchsbau. Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell), Rosalee’s boyfriend, watches the trial and notices something is not normal about this ziegevolk. He calls in detectives Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby). Being a Grimm, it is Nick’s job to dispose of Wesen who cause harm to others.

Ziegevolks eat frogs in order to enhance their influence over women, but this one seems to have an extra powerful influence that has taken over the whole courtroom. After witnessing his acts, Nick, Hank, Monroe and Rosalee need tofindawaytostophim, butitisnotas simple as they thought when they have to collect his sweat to activate the serum they are developing.

Enlisting the help of another Wesen friend, they are able to trap the ziegevolk into giving up his sweat without his knowing, but now comes the tricky part, injecting the serum into one of his frogs.

Nick and Hank distract the ziegevolk while Monroe injects the frog, but there are two frogs and the serum is only enough for one, so Monroe is forced to pick one and hope that the ziegevolk eats it. The trial continues and they wait anxiously to see if their plan has worked, and if the ziegevolk will not be able to convince the jury of his client’s innocence.

David Giuntoll pulls off another great performance as Nick, facing not only the dangers of the Wesen world, but also his heartbreak over his girlfriend being able to remember everyone around her except for him. Mitchell brings plenty of laughs with his character, Monroe, who has turned into a fan favorite since the first couple episodes.

This episode focused more on character development than some of the previous episodes, especially when it comes to Juliet (Bitsie Tulloch), Nick’s girlfriend. After Monroe spilled the beans about the trailer, Juliet becomes fixated on going there. Nick finally agrees that it might help Juliet get her memories if she visits the trailer and asks Monroe to take her.

While in the trailer, Juliet beings to remember, but all the memories try to come back at once, so she can’t understand them. Frustrated, Juliet leaves and enlists the help of a mystic woman who had tried to help her in a previous episode, but Juliet did not want her help at the time. It seems Juliet may have finally found a way to regain her memories of Nick.

This episode get four out of five stars from me. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I’m glad the writers are bringing Adalind (Claire Coffee) back. She is one evil Wesen who has been lurking in the shadows, and has something explosive up her sleeve that will lead this fast pace and entertaining second season to a close in only a few more episodes.
