Club Baseball Gets Ranked Seventh Nationally

With some success in recent years, the Longwood club baseball team has hit their stride as an organization this season, starting 11-0 before losing two of three this weekend on the road at Radford, one of the team’s foes in the National Club Baseball Association’s West Region of District III.

The series loss gives the Highlanders the lead in the region, but LU still has a shot at grabbing one of four regional spots, either by winning the region or securing the District’s sole at-large bid. The double-elimination regional tournament will be played after final exams in Martinsville, May 3-5.

The tournament’s winner will represent the District in the World Series May 17-21 in Paducah, Ky. On Monday, Team president and junior infielder Quaid Anderson said, “Losing is always tough, but we have a great group of guys that bounced back after a tough Game 1. We have a lot of new guys starting this year and they really showed a lot of heart, especially on Saturday against Radford.” This weekend features a three-game set in Harrisonburg, as the Lancers will take on the Dukes of James Madison.

Anderson said, “Going into the JMU series this weekend, the team is really focused on working hard this week to prepare for regionals and prove to other teams what we really have. We are all looking forward to facing JMU.”

Among those leading the Lancers’ potent offense thus far is junior second baseman Garrett Baker. Baker is batting .438, and also has a slugging percentage of .594. “Garrett has been a huge spark to this team. Garrett normally hits in the 6 or 7-hole in our lineup and is willing to do just about anything that we ask him to do,” said Anderson.

“He’s one of the hottest bats right now and is doing what he can to help us out. Garrett's been producing at the plate, but he provides us with a solid fielding second baseman ... but mostly has been a leader on and off the field.”

Even with the disheartening loss, Anderson is still confident in the team’s strength as they gun for another World Series appearance.

“The team is a very tight group. We have strong chemistry throughout the entire team. Guys are willing to come to practice and work hard.”

“We have to see what Radford does the rest of their conference games, but we are confident that if we do get a chance to go to regionals that we have the ability to accomplish our goal. We have a strong pitching rotation, led by Tyler Scrima and Brett Draper.

"We have guys that can hit in Garrett, Joe Stine, Joe Martin, Ben Moreland and Connor Smedile. We have a strong bench that is always positive and helping in any way they can. I believe that we are more focused after the Radford series than we have been all year.”
