Still playing with the motivation from a 76-61 win over Radford on Saturday, the Lancers started last night’s game against rival Liberty University with intensity. With Tristan Carey unstoppable at the three-point line, Longwood managed to stay ahead for the whole game and played with consistency.
The entirety of Willett Hall was on the edge of their seat as the Lancers and Flames combined for 55 points in the last four minutes and 34 in the final two.
Carey’s 40 points were enough to give Longwood one of its biggest wins ever on Tuesday, as Longwood (6-22, 3-11 Big South) pulled it out against their rivals, 102-101.
Longwood will go into BracketBusters on a late season high. With Carey scoring in double figures in the past 13 games and freshman Michael Kessens averaging 16.0 points in his last six games, the Lancers are now preparing for UT-Martin this weekend.
“The BracketBusters event gives us the opportunity to be part of a prestigious series of games, and in our match-up versus UT-Martin, we’ll see if we can, again, replicate our ability to play pretty well away from home.
“Last time out on the road, we won at Winthrop, and before that, had played well in three-straight Saturday away games. Our team is looking forward to every chance we get to be on the court playing right now, and Saturday afternoon out in Tennessee will be no different,” Coach Mike Gillian told LongwoodLancers. com about Saturday’s contest.
Looking forward to the final stretch of their season, the Lancers will play their final two regular-season games at Campbell on Feb. 28 and VMI on March 2.
