The band, Bullet for my Valentine, released their new album “Temper Temper” on Feb. 12. From their past three albums they were a great example of metal music with good use of solos and drums as well as screaming. But their new album did not seem anything like their past albums “The Poison,” “Scream Aim Fire” or “Fever.” “Temper Temper” presents itself as a poorly put together group of songs that lacks musical excellence that the band had back when they released their first album in 2006. Bullet for my Valentine’s present musical standpoint makes them sound as if they are a wanna-be metal band that can’t decide what genre they are.
There are a few songs that start out generally well, like the songs “P.O.W” and “Riot.” Those two songs would make listeners think that they have used some similar sounds and techniques that were present in past albums. As the course of each song continues, they start to change into slow tempo rock music instead of metal. The change in the sounds of the songs probably confused the fans who were anticipating something dramatically different than what they had been given from this 2013 release.
In general, all the songs in “Temper Temper” have extremely bland lyrics and a lack of quality in guitar solos. Even though there are a few solos, they are the only good parts about the whole album. The songs also seem as if they are short on some instru- ments or just have a lack of quality musicians to fill the emptiness of the songs. The lack of background music and a good base makes the songs sound in- complete and very mediocre.
Throughout the entire album there was a shortage of screaming which was what seemed to draw listeners to the band’s past songs and made them popular, especially around the time “Poison” and “Scream Aim Fire” were big in 2006 and 2008. Now, with “Temper Temper,” they seem to sound more like rock music instead of metal. The band seems almost confused with what type of genre they are, or they just thought a dramatic change was a good idea ... which it wasn’t.
Overall, the album is quite a disappointment to those who were expecting a comeback record since it has been three years since they last released one. With the lack of quality sounds, use of instruments and vocals and an inability to excite listeners, this album will leave many fans disappointed.
