After this weekend, the women's tennis team is at .500 for the season with a 10-10 record. Longwood lost to George Washington 6-1 on Friday at home but bounced back the next day with a 7-0 victory against North Carolina A&T. The only lady lancer to come out on top against George Washington was freshman Malin Allgurin 6-2, 6-0 at number three singles.
Allgurin also played number 1 doubles with junior Allison Shulman but the duo lost 8-1. Shulman also came up short 6-3, 6-1 at number two singles. Junior Marta Pinyol of Spain lost 6-2, 6-4 at number one singles, and sophomore Sarah Moomau went down 6-1, 6-4 at number four singles. The junior-sophomore pair also dropped the number two doubles match 8-4. Sophomore Nicole Parker played number five singles and was beat 6-1, 6-4, while she and junior Hannah Hill came out 8-1 at number three doubles. Sophomore Bethany Law was in the number six slot for singles and was topped 7-5, 6-0.
The Lancers came back hungry the next day. The home finale was a flawless one as the lady lancers didn't lose a match. Allgurin won at number three with 6-0, 6-0 victory. Allgurin is now tied for ninth in Longwood history with 18 wins on the season so far and also extended her match-winning streak to eleven in a row.
Allgurin swept her number one doubles match with Shulman too at 8-0. Shulman then went on to win at number two singles 6-1, 6-2. Pinyol took the 6-2, 6-1 win at number one singles as well as the 8-2 win at number two doubles with partner Moomau. Moomau defeated her number four singles opponent 6-1, 6-2, and Parker earned the point at number five singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Hill paired with Parker at number three doubles for the 8-1 win, while Law finished the sweep with one of her own at number six singles 6-0, 6-0.
Longwood is scheduled to play Howard University Saturday, April 14 but with all the recent trouble with Howard athletics, Longwood's Head Coach Jacob Gustafsson isn't sure if the match is still taking place.
