Students Voicing Sports Opinions with LancersBlog

Along with Longwood University's entrance to the Big South, there is something else for Lancer fans to be excited about as of late - a new website allows those of the Longwood community to read about their Lancer teams and voice their opinions. LancersBlog.com was started in mid-January by Parks Smith, a 2008 graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences and Communication Studies department. Smith, who now lives in Richmond with his fiancé, said in an email a few weeks ago, "I've wanted to create an open forum and fan-site for Longwood for a long time. Many comparable schools have a site and they [have] always been a great place to discuss, gather news and get fan opinions from virtually every side of the spectrum."

"When I caught wind of the Big South announcement in early January I knew that was the time to launch the site" Smith said. The site, which as the name suggests is set up like a blog, has had dozens of posts since the first on Jan. 22. Many of them have pertained to coverage of future Big South opponents of Longwood, recaps of several Men's Basketball games, and updates on Antwan Carter's chase of the alltime men's basketball scoring record. Carter broke that record on Feb. 20. Another major part of the site is the message board extension, which is an open forum for Lancer fans to voice their opinions about all 15 of the University's athletic teams. And voice any opinions they have, according to Smith: "The response to the site has been overwhelming, each day we grow in traffic, and it's awesome to see how many alumni, students and fans are passionate about Lancer's athletics and how many people want to discuss what's going on in Farmville."

Smith, who founded the Lancer Lunatics when he got to Farmville in 2004, said that he appreciates the work of Eric Stoller, director of marketing for the Athletics Department and the way that he is working to get students to participate more in athletics. As far as the future is concerned, he wishes for the blog to continue growing as it has every day since its creation: "As the blog continues to grow, I hope to be able to give it a facelift and it becomes something similar to Coastal- Fans.com. I also hope it spawns into something where we can get alumni meet-ups, road trips and other events going in the future."

The official LancersBlog website can be found at www.lancersblog.com. The message boards are located at www.lancersblog.proboards.com.
