Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA) will present
its first ever Laugh Your ASA Off, a
comedy act event where Longwood students
are able to put their class clown
skills to the test by taking it to the stage
on April 11 at 7 p.m. in Jarman Auditorium.
The emcee for the event will be
Nancy McDonald, creator of the famous
"Blue and White" song. The winner of
the event will receive a trophy and a
cash donation to his or her charity of
choice.
Philanthropy Chair of ASA Megan
O'Laughlen said, "We were interested
in trying to start something that could
be a lot of fun for the Longwood community
and a great way to raise money
for our philanthropies, and we all like
to laugh, so we thought a comedy acts
would be the perfect idea. And as for
the name, I feel like it just slipped out
of one of our mouths one day and from
then on we just knew we had to keep it
as the event name."
The event, as stated on the Facebook
event page, is "to help raise money for
our philanthropies, Special Olympics
and the S. June Smith Center, which
supports children with developmental
needs through education, therapeutic
services and family-centered programming."
O'Laughlen notes that ASA is still
reaching out to interested students, saying,
"We are still open to viewing auditions."
The Laugh Your ASA Off Facebook
page says to post a short video to the
page or go for a live audition in the
Lancer Productions office, room 207 of
Lankford Student Union. Those interested
can go to the doodle page link
provided on the page.
Concerning the judging process,
O'Laughlen said, "The contestants will
be judged by a team of faculty judges
who will have to remain a secret until
the event."
The Facebook event page reports, "We
encourage individual performers, as
well as group acts, to audition! You can
have skits, songs, improv - anything
funny! Just make sure to keep it a little
clean - nothing you wouldn't want
your teachers to hear."
"We are looking for a positive attitude
and some good, wholesome laughs. We
would love to see funny acts of all types:
individuals or groups, stand-up or skit,
even a musical number or dance. We
just want some time that will put a smile
on the face of our audience and that the
participant can have a great time doing,"
said O'Laughlen.
O'Laughlen said, "I hope to create
something positive and fun for the
Longwood community that will allow
students to let loose and act silly. I'm so
excited for the students that we do have
performing, and the possibility of more
students coming out and auditioning
from all over Longwood makes me
hopeful that this event can have a great
presence beyond just Greek life."
"I think events like this present an opportunity
for individuals and groups
from anywhere a chance to play, be creative
and goof-off, which is sometimes
hard to let ourselves do during the last
half of the semester," said O'Laughlen.
Longwood students have reacted positively
to the event so far. Anna Nelson
posted on the Laugh Your ASA Off Facebook
event page, saying, "This is such
an awesome idea for an event!"
Erikk Leeroy Shupp posted on the
Facebook page, saying, "I've been waiting
for one of these."
