Starting their season with three consecutive loss es and three injuries, the Longwood women's la crosse team recorded their first win of the season this past Friday, March 2, defeating the University of Cincinnati 17-11.
Scoring 12 goals in the first half alone, the Lanc ers were led by junior Jamie Bretlinger (Gambrills, Md.), who recorded four goals by the end of the game. Closely behind was sophomore Lauren Pransnicki (Lexington, Va.) contributing two goals and two assists, and freshman Alexa Anderson (Richmond, Va.) with three goals and one assist.
Leading 12-4 at halftime, Longwood was able to hold off the Cincinnati team, who scored seven goals in the second half. Offsetting those seven goals, the Lancers added four more goals of their own, two from Bretlinger and freshman Liz Train er (Ellicott City, Md.), with 1:31 remaining in the game.
Junior goalie Mollie Zimmerman (Fairpoint, N.Y.) earned her first win of the 2012 season, mak ing eight saves and preventing Cincinnati from making a late-game run. Leading the team in draw controls were seniors Hannah Riggs (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Sam Stifler (Jarretsville, Md.), each recording two.
Sophomore Kathleen Battle (Nellysford, Va.) scooped up a game-high seven ground balls in the win, while also forcing two turnovers. Scoring 17 of their 26 total shots, the Lancers played two solid halves in their first win of the year.
