The Longwood Men's Baseball team has won seven of their last ten games to begin their 2012 baseball campaign. Last Friday, the Lancers grabbed an exciting extra inning victory over Temple University Owls after which they split two games against the Owls on Saturday.

On Friday, Longwood fell be hind by four runs early in the third inning as Temple cashed in on a couple singles and a double. Striking back quickly, the Lanc ers scored three runs in the bot tom of the inning to cut the lead to one. Freshman Zach Jordan (Hopewell, Va.) doubled to lead-off, scoring off an RBI grounder from sophomore Matt Dickason (Chesapeake, Va.). Later in the inning, sophomore Scott Burkett (Williamsburg, Va.) added an other double, scoring freshman Travis Biddix (Richmond, Va.) off first.

Off two errors in the fourth in ning, the Lancers tied the game 5-5. The game went back and forth as the Owls then scored two more in the fifth, giving them the 6-4 advantage. A solo homerun from Robby Newman in the bottom of the fifth would cut the Owls' lead to one for the second time in the game. Finally shutting down Temple's offense in the sixth, the Lancers once again tied the game 6-6 off an RBI single from Justin Lacy (Glen Allen, Va.). Pitching from both Longwood and Temple kept the score tied for the next four in nings. It would take until inning 11 to finally decide the victor. Af ter Biddix walked and moved to third on a throwing error, senior Matt Gwaltney, (Chesterfield, Va.) pinch-hitting, attained the game winning RBI single to give the Lancers the 7-6 victory.

Longwood faced the Owls two more times on Saturday in a doubleheader, winning the first game 3-2 and losing the second 11-1. In their first outing of the day, the score remained stuck at zero for both teams until the fourth when the Owls took the lead 1-0. Two scoreless innings followed before the Lancers took the lead by two in the seventh, attributed to a Burkett RBI triple, and a Lacy run-scoring single. Although Temple would reply with a run in the eighth to tie the game once again, Longwood's Burkett would score the game winning run off freshman Bran don Delk's (Newport News, Va.) base-hit to left field. Gwaltney pitched seven straight innings, only allowing three hits and one run.

The Lancers fell short of a se ries shutout later that afternoon, as the Owls scored 10 runs af ter only three innings of play. Avoiding the shutout, Long wood scored but only one run in the sixth off a couple of singles and a sacrifice fly ball before los ing 11-1.

The Longwood Men's Base ball team looks to continue their winning season home today against Norfolk State University at 3 p.m.
