Men's Basketball Loses a Thriller in Overtime

On Saturday, Feb. 11, Longwood lost an overtime thriller to Seattle Univer sity 100-99. Longwood drops to 8-16 for the season while Seattle improves to 7-14. Senior Center Antwan Carter led Longwood with 27 points and 13 rebounds, giving him his ninth dou ble-double of the season.

The Lancers took a 19-point lead into the half (51-32) and were 59 per cent from the field including 53 per cent from the three point line. The Redhawks rallied in the second half and were led by senior forward Aar on Broussard with a game-high 33 points.

The Redhawks scored the last six points at the end of regulation to force the game into overtime. The Redhawks continued their momen tum in overtime by scoring the final five points, including the basket from Broussard with 1.2 seconds left to win the game.

According to the university's web site, head coach Mike Gillian said, "I couldn't be prouder of the effort of our guys, of the way they have paid attention to details recently, and how they have been able to put what we need to do into action on the court … We were able to control the first half today and played very well. Seattle was able to make it hectic in the sec ond half and overtime and force us into a few too many mistakes. With all that, we were in position to win the game three different times and just needed to make one more play to come out on top."

Longwood started the game hot and took an 11-point lead (24-13) with 11:07 remaining in the half, with eight points from sophomore guard Da vid Robinson and eight points from sophomore guard Tristan Carey. The Lancers were in control of the game the entire first half and only had three turnovers to help take a 19-point lead into the half.

In the second half, the Redhawks decided to put full court pressure on and trap the Lancers, forcing 14 turnovers. The Redhawks also sped up the game and kept up the tempo throughout the second half with a 12-man rotation.

Meanwhile, the Lancers only had seven players due to injury, de partures and suspension. The fa tigue and pressure hurt the Lancers throughout the second half and the Redhawks capitalized with 21 points off of turnovers.

Longwood wasn't going down without a fight; after Seattle tied the game 60-60 with 9:54 left, the Lancers went on a 10-0 run led by Carter with seven points. Carter then finished a three-point play as he was fouled on a lay-up with two minutes left in reg ulation. This gave the Lancers an 86-80 lead, but the Redhawks responded with a 6-0 to tie the game with 26 seconds left in regulation. Robinson attempted a three-pointer to win the game, but missed to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the game went back and forth with two lead changes and three ties. After free throws from Se nior Forward Jan van der Kooij, the Lancers had 99-95 lead with 17 sec onds left in the game.

After the Redhawks made a three-pointer to make the score 99-98, the Lancers turned the ball over to give the Redhawks a chance with 12 sec onds left. Broussard made the last second lay-up to win the game for the Redhawks.

Although the Lancers lost, it was Longwood Basketball Reunion Day and the great turnout from Long wood legends brightened the af ternoon. Junior Burr '96, DeVonne Johnson '96, Gary Austin '88, Tony Good '90, Keith Latimer '91, Maurice Sumter '07, Kevin Jefferson '90, Ran dy Johnson '82, Jon Hughes '00, EJ Dawson '10, Jerome Kersey '84, Aaron Mitchell '11, Mike McCroey '82, Billy Robinson Jr. '10, Dana Smith '10, and Jamie Clark '00 were all in attendance and participated in an alumni game.

The alumni game took place prior to the men's game and the white team won 61-58. Carter will soon join these legends and hopes to do so with the crown of most points scored in school history. Carter (1,740) is approaching the top two scorers, Jefferson (1,806) and Kersey (1,756).
