Farmville and Rice Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a structure fire Sunday night at the 1200 block of Fifth Avenue in Farmville. According to Assistant Fire Chief Andrew Goss of the Farmville Fire Department, the fire began in the chimney around 8 p.m. He said the fire then spread to the interior of the home. Goss said there might have been cracks in the chimney bricks due to the earthquake last year. By 9:15 p.m., firefighters were determining if the fire was out in the chimney and had it out inside the home. They were unable to dig down into the chimney due to some sort of blockage.
Goss said the residents were at home. Fire departments left the scene around 10:30 p.m. There is no word on how costly the damage to the home was.
