In Case You Missed It: While students are away, athletes still play

A lot happened in Longwood athletics while students were away on winter break. Here's a recap:

-Men's basketball defeated in-state, and now Big South, rival VMI 110-89 on Dec. 12. The team also had a huge home matchup against Big East powerhouse Seton Hall on Dec. 23. The Lancers had the lead early, but lost to the Pirates 87-61.

-It was tough sledding for the women's basketball team over the break. The Lancers were a collective 2-11 while students were away from campus and have a 6-17 record overall.

-Sophomore Nick Surkamp of the men's soccer team was named the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) Player of the Year. He also made the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Second Team. He also was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) University Division All-East Region Second Team. Surkamp had a team high of 11 goals last season. He also scored four match-winning goals.

-Men's soccer also had big news regarding senior goalkeeper Joel Helmick. Helmick was selected by the Colorado Rapids with the 14th pick in the fourth round of the 2012 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft. He was a four-year starter for Longwood and recorded 14 shutouts. Helmick is the first player to ever be selected in the Supplemental Draft.
