Basketball Struggles to Compete and Win Games

Basketball Struggles to Compete and Win Games

Mieke Elkington has become a reliable player during her first season on the women's basketball team.

The Longwood men's basketball team lost at Eastern Kentucky University last Sunday 78-71. The Lancers held a 46-35 lead early in the second half of action, but were swept aside by a 17-10 Colonels run during closing minutes. Sophomore Tristan Carey led Longwood with a game-high 25 points, but fouled out late in the going. Senior Antwan Carter had 19 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Eastern Kentucky's Jaron Jones had 23 points, 17 of which came in the second half.

The Lancers did not fare well at all against Florida Gulf Coast last night. The Lancers did not get off to a good start and quickly fell behind, eventually losing 101-58. Antwan Carter led the Lancers with 18 points and nine rebounds on a night when nothing the Lancers did went right.

Longwood has been on the road quite a bit during the month of January, only playing one game at home on Jan. 6. The next home game for the Lancers is on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. Their record is currently 7-14.

The Longwood University women's basketball team won at home against Dartmouth College last Saturday 86-76. Senior Brittanni Billups and junior Crystal Smith led Longwood with 21 points apiece.

Four Lancers scored double digit points against the Big Green. Faziah Steen played lights out for the visitors with 29 points. It was the most points the women's team had scored in a single game since the 2007-08 campaign.

The women's team followed up Saturday's win with a loss at Murray State University on Monday. The final score was 86-77. Crystal Smith had 18 points and a career-high 11 assists. Junior Mieke Elkington had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Five Lancers scored in double digits. Longwood had the lead at the half 40-35, but the Racers stormed back to take the lead late and seal the win. Erica Burgess scored 31 points for the home Racers.

Longwood returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, Jan. 25 when it takes on Eastern Kentucky University at 7 p.m. in Richmond, Ky.
