The Longwood Lancers women's soccer team picked up its seventh victory of the year on Sunday, defeating Francis Marion University on the road 3-0. The game was held in Florence, S.C. Longwood's three goals were scored by senior Mackenzie King, junior captain Lindsey Ottavio and redshirt freshman Stephanie Green. The game at Francis Marion concluded the Lancers' 2011 season. The team's final record was 7-7-4.

The Lancers and the Patriots battled each other to a scoreless first half. Longwood fought hard in the second half, keeping up the tempo on offense and defense. Ottavio broke through with the game-winning goal in the 54th minute. King was credited with the assist. King scored the second goal for Longwood just four minutes later, sending the ball into the net from about 20 yards out; it was her first goal of 2011. Green scored the final Lancer goal in the 67th minute after an assist from senior captain Kacie Oliver. It was Green's first collegiate career goal. Longwood's three goal tally was the most scored in a game all season.

The Lancers held a 14-2 edge in shots attempted (8-1 shots on-goal and maintained a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Oliver led the team with a game-high four shot attempts (two on-goal). King, Ottavio, Green and three other Lancers all had one shot attempt that was on goal. Ottavio's goal was her third of the season. Junior goalkeeper Kyra Byron played all 90 minutes for the Lancers to record her sixth shutout of 2011, even though she did record a save. The team was credited with the only stop of a Patriot shot. The Patriots' only other shot attempt sailed wide of the net as the game concluded.

Longwood and Francis Marion were playing each other for the ninth time in the sport of women's soccer. The Lancers' victory on Sunday was the first in five visits to Florence, S.C. However, the Patriots still lead the series between the schools 6-3.

"It's always nice to end the season with a win," said Head Coach Todd Dyer on longwoodlancers.com. "Even more so, it's great to see the team play some of our best soccer of the season and earn the goals and result to show for it. After a scoreless first half, we kept our composure and continued to press forward as the game continued.  Our first goal was one of our best team attacking moves of the season in terms of movement and combination play, and it helped our confidence and energy the rest of the way. The way the game unfolded, we were able to play our seniors quite a bit and it was great to see them all out there together to close out their careers. Go Lancers!"

Dyer's overall record as head coach is 193-119-20 (.611). 2011 was Dyer's 18th year as head coach of the program. He has been the program's head coach since its inception and has had 14 winning seasons. The 2011 women's soccer campaign was the sixth consecutive season with a record of .500 or better. Six of Longwood's seven losses were by a single goal, three of which were in double-overtime. Overall, the women's team played in a program record eight overtime games in 2011 with a record of 1-3-4.
