Loud music, bright lights and a display of aerial acrobatics are three things students can expect next Thursday, Oct. 17 at WMLU's first ever sanctioned rave.
The rave promises to be an excellent showcase of Longwood talent in addition to a fun time for the students who attend. "One Student will be playing some of his own dubstep remixes," said WMLU Publicity Director Jessica Page. WMLU Programming Director Bryan Roethel added that Ashley "Hoopgirl" Russell will be performing an aerial LED light show at the event.
This event was the brainchild of Roethel and Chuck Wongus, former Battle of the Bands co-chair, and has come to fruition thanks to the efforts of Page.
The Rave is a fundraiser for WMLU, Longwood's own campus radio station. The organization is trying to raise money in light of last year's budget cuts.
"I just think it's a really great way for everyone on campus to get together," said Roethel. "Anyone who's looking to have a little fun should come." Between the music and the acrobatic stunts, the event promises not to disappoint.
Page pointed out that this event guarantees to be a lot of fun without the dangers associated with most raves. "Students get an opportunity to have fun in a way that isn't looked down on," she said.
But WMLU isn't doing this just for the money. "I think this event isn't just a way to raise money for WMLU, but a chance to have an event that they can become highly recognized for," said Page. This rave is also part of an initiative by WMLU to become more involved in student affairs, in addition to providing a wide variety of radio programming and hosting Battle of the Bands at Oktoberfest and Bandfest at Spring Weekend.
Currently, the organization is working on the lineup for this year's Bandfest, which Roethel hopes will be "the best one yet." He was also excited to announce that Sports Broadcasting will be back up within the next week, and that there has been increased interest in WMLU, meaning more shows and greater variety of programming than ever.
"We're not just the creepy kids in the basement," said Roethel. "We want to be involved on campus, and we really want to have fun with Longwood."
WMLU's Rave will be held from 10 p.m. to midnight on Thursday, Oct. 17 in the ABC rooms of the Lankford Student Union. The entry fee is five dollars, but if students bring canned goods to donate to FACES, the charge is reduced to three dollars. Page and WMLU encourage all to come. "It's gonna be rad," she assured.
Students can listen to WMLU at 91.3 FM, on cable or online at WMLU.org.
