Sports Briefs: The Wide World of Athletics at Longwood

"Coffee with the Coach"

Men's basketball head coach Mike Gillian will be at the Barnes & Noble Longwood Bookstore Café every Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. during the basketball season. Fans are welcome to come out to chat with Gillian about the team during that time and can also get a free cup of coffee. The café is located in the Longwood Landings. The promotion began today (Nov. 9) and is sponsored by the bookstore.

 

Hall of Fame Class to Be Inducted

The 2011 Longwood Hall of Fame class will be inducted in a ceremony on Nov. 12. It is the fourth induction class of all time. Inductees include Darryl Case (Class of 1984), Longwood's only four-time All-American in men's soccer; Claire Reyes Williams (Class of 2001), a two-time All-American in field hockey; and the entire 1991 Longwood baseball team, which finished 41-8 (a school record) and advanced to the Final Four of the D-II World Series. The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. in the Blackwell Ballroom.

 

Goulding named NorPac East Division Defensive Player of Year

Longwood junior field hockey player Kaye Goulding was named the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) East Division Defensive Player of the Year last Wednesday. Goulding, seniors Sarah Bietsch and Olga Knop, junior Brittany Diaz and sophomore Stacey de Grandhomme were all named to the NorPac East Division All-Conference Team.

 

Longwood to Offer Free Admission for Veterans at Navy Game

Longwood Student Veterans (LSV) and the Longwood Athletics Department will offer free admission to armed forces veterans at Friday's men's basketball game against Navy. The Navy game is on Veteran's Day (Nov. 11). Veterans will need to bring military identification to the ticket booth in Willett Hall to be admitted to the game. T-shirts will be given to veterans while supplies last. Food will also be provided by LSV and the Lancer Club. A guest speaker from the Virginia Wounded Warrior Project will talk before first tip at 7 p.m. Longwood President Brigadier General Patrick Finnegan said in a press release, "We are pleased to be able to salute our veterans on Veterans Day through special recognition at the first men's basketball game this year. We are glad we have this special opportunity to thank them for their service in front of our enthusiastic fans. We hope their presence will help spur the Lancers on to their first victory of the season!"
