SGA Allocates Money to Tri Council During Meeting

During the Nov. 8 meeting of the Student Government Association (SGA), Freshman Class Representative Kelly Fay was sworn in. During the open forum segment of the meeting, one senator said the water fountains in Hiner Hall needed to be fixed because there is not a lot of pressure in the water fountains. Another senator brought up that the bathrooms in the library needed to be cleaned on a regular basis

One senator brought up a concern about a student who was supposed to register on Monday. The student is on the tuition payment plan and paid her installment this month. She originally got an email saying everything was in check earlier in the week, but on Friday, she got an email saying she owed $50. She was unable to get to Cashiering and Student Accounts in time to pay on Friday afternoon so she had a hold on her account and could not register for classes. The senator expressed concern that the student did not have enough time to rectify the situation before registration.

Another senator complained that when she went to cashiering, the cashier took a personal phone call while waiting on her and did not speak to her. She would like to see better customer service. One senator felt that many showers in Frazer Hall are incredibly hot. The senator was advised to do individual work orders to rectify the situation. Another senator would like to see change machines and machines to load cash on to lancer cards in all of the washer/dryer rooms in the dorms.

Dr. Tim Pierson, vice president for student affairs, gave two updates during the meeting. He explained to the Senate that Facilities Management is still looking into the most effective way to heat South Cunningham.

Pierson also said he received some criticism for sending the email to students about the Tau Kappa Epsilon hazing allegations. Senator Brian Reid said he felt the email was a good step because a statement from the university helped prevent the rumor mill from spinning out of control. Pierson felt that due to the speed of social media, he felt an obligation to put out an official statement. He also said he felt as if students handled the media presence on campus very well.

During the executive report, SGA President Brandon Fry encouraged students to come listen to a representative from Orca TV next week at the SGA meeting. He also encouraged students to utilize the comment box on the SGA website, and any student who has a concern can email sgasenate@live.longwood.edu. Any email sent to that address would automatically go to every senator.

Every four years constitutions need to be submitted to the SGA for reapproval. The Black Student Association's resubmitted constitution was approved. The constitution for the Hispanic Heritage Club was approved, as well as the constitution for the National Society for Leadership and Success.

Senators brought forward some other concerns during the meeting. One senator felt professors were not aware that students no longer have access to free printing. Another senator expressed concern that some professors are issuing incorrect personal identification numbers (PIN) for student registration. A third senator wanted a friendly reminder to go to professors that an "A minus" will bump a student off President's List. All three of these issues will be addressed at the next Faculty Senate meeting.

A total of $9,408 was allocated to Tri-Council. Tri-Council is made up of the three Greek communities on campus, IFC, CPC and NPHC. Each segment of Tri-Council will be sending four members to the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Conference.

A total of $2,680 was also allocated to Tri-Council for a keynote speaker. Tri-Council had $3,000 already secured for the event. The 80 student workshop is to help organizations learn to motivate "the middle" of the organization-the members who care about the organization but need some more spark to get involved.

If you want to get exclusive dining deals, text "lancers" to 65374. On Thursday, be sure to stop by "Save a Life" in the Student Union Ballroom from 12-6 p.m. The event is to encourage people to be aware about the dangers of drunk driving.
