Philanthropic Efforts by Longwood CPC Chapters

This semester has proved to be a very busy time for College Pan-Hellenic Council sororities. The Greek women on this campus have spent a great amount of time on charitable efforts throughout the semester. From Farmville to Richmond, our sororities have spent a lot of time and raised a great deal of money for their own and each other's philanthropies. These organizations are also spending their time to support the Farmville and Longwood communities.

On Oct. 26, Delta Zeta held their annual Turtle Tug to raise money for the Longwood Center for Communication. This center provides a summer camp each year for Farmville children with speech and hearing impairments. They have donated $700 so far to the center.

Delta Zeta is also co-sponsoring a campus wide alcohol awareness program called the Save a Life Tour. This program took place on Nov. 10 and featured drinking and driving simulators, powerful videos and personal stories. This program holds national acclaim by universities nationwide. In addition, Delta Zeta participates with Meals on Wheels at least once a week to assist those in need in the Farmville community.

Kappa Delta held their annual purse drive this semester as well. On campus alone they collected 27 purses to donate to Madeline's House. On Oct. 30, they met with a troop of brownies to support one of their philanthropies, Girl Scouts of America. They also held a Teddy Bear Run to support the Children's Hospital of Richmond on Nov. 5.

To support the local community, Kappa Delta held a one mile run called "Run With the Cops" on Nov. 3. They teamed up with the campus police for this event to support Prince Edward youth sports. The proceeds will go towards buying jerseys and other equipment.

The sisters of Sigma Sigma Sigma have worked with the Farmville community in numerous ways as well. They have volunteered at FACES to pass out essential foods such as breads and canned goods. The sisters also made homemade cards for residents at the Woodlands nursing home and hand-delivered them while spending time with senior citizens. The chapter also plans to volunteer at the Habitat ReStore as well as hosting the annual Longwood Giving Tree program.

Finally, Alpha Gamma Delta traveled to Richmond to volunteer at a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk by running the children's area and accounting during the event.

The sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta also recently decided to adopt a local family in need for the holidays. They will be donating Christmas gifts as well as food for a Christmas dinner to help the family celebrate without worry this holiday season.

Our chapters have been very successful in supporting their philanthropies all semester. We are very proud to call ourselves Greek and to help each other reach common goals of serving our communities and philanthropies.
