There no doubt that winter break is greatly looked forward to by many of us. Sometimes, however, within the first week of being at home, we find being away from the hustle and bustle of college life somewhat boring. This is especially true for people who do not have a job or anything to really occupy their time. Sometimes it is nice to just get out of the house and go on a little adventure to get more in the holiday spirit.
The holiday season would not be complete without a trip to Christmas Town at Busch Gardens Amusement Park in Williamsburg, Va. This annual event offers an array of activities for people of all ages. And what trip would not be complete without strolling around the park after dark to see all the trees, buildings and sidewalks lit up for the season? Don't forget to grab a cup of peppermint hot chocolate and go down and see the penguins on display. Single day tickets start at $24.99.
Whether you live in a small or large town, chances are you can take part in this next activity. Who doesn't love an old fashioned Christmas parade? While many areas, just like Farmville, will be having their parade this coming weekend, many are waiting until closer to the holiday season. Be sure to check your town's calendar of events or the local newspaper for when the nearest Christmas parade to you will be held.
If you're like me, getting out of the house to have fun will be pretty simple. Why not drive around a local neighborhood at night and gaze at the Christmas lights? This is a perfect, fun and cheap (all you need to do is pay for gas) activity that the entire family can take part in. Simply scout out some areas with an abundance of Christmas decorations and circle the houses until you've taken in all the festive spirit you can hold!
If intense music-filled light shows are up your alley, I would recommend heading up to Bull Run Park's Festival of Lights in Centreville, Va. The light festival just opened Nov. 23 and will run through Jan. 8. Each year, some 30,000 cars drive through the park, taking in the amazing light show made up of hundreds of thousands of little twinkling lights. Admission is $20 per car on weekends and holidays and $15 per car Monday-Thursday. Don't forget about the walk-in carnival at the end of the light show!
Perhaps Christmas trees and a beautiful view of the nation's capital have replaced the visions of sugarplums dancing in your head. If so, head up to Washington, D.C. for the view of the national tree on the Ellipse at President's Park. This huge tree is poised at the center of the park surrounded by smaller trees from each U.S. state. The 89th annual lighting will take place tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
No matter what you do this holiday season, be sure to have fun and be safe. Keep the spirit of the holidays in mind and have a wonderful break!
