Money Allocated During the Senate Meeting

During the Tuesday, Nov. 29 meeting of the Student Government Association (SGA), Senator Shannon Rosedale expressed a concern on behalf of another student. The student had left her identification card at home. The card was being mailed to her, but in the meantime, she had no way to enter her residence hall. She went to the Longwood University Police Department to enquire about a loner card.

LUPD directed her to the Lancer Card center. The center told her she needed to purchase a new card. She explained that hers was being mailed and she needed a temporary solution. They sent her back to the police department, who attempted to send her back to the center. Rosedale said she would like to see more communication between the two departments.

SGA Historian Angela Fulks said that she would like to see water as an option in the vending machines. Senator Jordan Wood brought up concerns that the gravel parking lots have some low dips, and low setting cars run the risk of scraping the bottom of their car in the dips. She asked how often the lots are replenished with gravel, and would like to see the replenishing occur on a more regular basis.

Senator Daniel Hughes brought up a concern about an article The Rotunda ran about a break-in on Appomattox Street. Hughes felt that the article, along with the student's name, was a violation of their student rights. He argued that The Rotunda, being university-funded, had no place to be covering these sorts of events. President Brandon Fry pointed out that The Rotunda has freedom of the press; however, Hughes argued that The Rotunda serves the student body and, as citizen-leaders, had no right to publish the article.

Java City will not only be open 24/7 during exam week, but sell products during that time as well. The location will be closely monitored to ensure it is being utilized properly. Executive Senator Gina DeMarco reminded everyone to be respectful while utilizing the lounge.

A total of $1,131.56 was allocated to Alpha Phi Alpha for a conference. A total of $979.97 was allocated to WMLU 91.3 FM for a prebuilt multipurpose machine and external hard drives. The new equipment will allow them to record their shows and broadcast live on the online streaming segment of their website.

Stop by Lancer Café in the Lankford Student Union to participate in a toy drive. $5 will buy three gifts for a child in need in Farmville. The toys are available in the café and they can be purchased using bonus dollars, so if you have a lot of bonus dollars left on your account, this would be one way to use them up. Stop by Chick-fil-A on Thursday between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. with a toy to be entered in a chicken nugget eating content. Two names will be selected to engage in an eating content at 6 p.m.

This was the last SGA meeting of the semester. Meetings will start up again in Jan. of next year.
