Yesterday, Director of Athletics Troy Austin announced that the Longwood women's lacrosse program will move from the National Lacrosse Conference (NLC) and join the Atlantic Sun Conference as an affiliate member. The move will come into effect starting with the 2013 season. The Lancers will be part of a seven-team league that includes Atlantic Sun members Jacksonville, Mercer, Stetson and Kennesaw State, as well as affiliate members Detroit Mercy and Howard. Detroit Mercy and Howard are also currently members of the NLC.
"I am thankful for the Atlantic Sun Conference's invitation to Longwood women's lacrosse," said Austin in a press release. "This affiliate membership will allow our program to continue to compete against quality peer institutions for an opportunity at NCAA post-season play."
Longwood was one of four original NLC members in 2009. The team has a 14-2 overall record and won the NLC tourney in 2009 and 2010. Longwood will finish its time in the NLC next spring. Austin also expressed his gratitude to the NLC.
"I would like to note that the National Lacrosse Conference was a quality conference, which was a credit to the perseverance of its founders," added Austin. "My great appreciation goes to Steve Corder, NLC Commissioner, as well as the other member coaches and administrators who worked hard to establish that single-sport league."
