Oktoberfest Midway Coordinator Explains Booth Application Process

Booths at Oktoberfest have been a long-standing tradition at Longwood University. Organizations and clubs utilize these spaces to sell food and novelties as well as gather donations to support projects throughout the semester. This year, a few students were concerned about not getting a booth for the annual celebration.

Mortar Board Midway Organizer Katherine Long explained the forms to apply for an Oktoberfest booth were sent out to organizations two or three weeks ahead of time to ensure everyone had ample time to sign up. They were also on the CollegiateLink website. Long said she receives the contact information from CollegiateLink, "so if that info isn't updated, I can't help that."

There were at least 67 booths registered by the due date on Sept. 21. About 10 applications that came in were put on a waiting list due to not enough booths being available. Long said she informed those organizations on the waiting list via email Friday evening saying they needed to send a representative from the organization to her that morning next to Lancer Stage behind the Lankford Student Union. Long then gave out the extra booths to those who came and found her during set-up on Saturday.

"I had two organizations show and they both got booths," said Long. Those organizations were the Secular Student Alliance and the Cormier Honors College.

Long said there was only one organization that complained about the process. "They were on the original list, but we only had spacing for 65 booths. They weren't originally on the map because we weren't sure where Longwood was going to place them, so we called the extra booths ‘floating booths,' and we were going to hand those out that morning during set-up."

She said she has not received any additional complaints since then. Long said the only problem that people may have run into was misreading the application submission deadline and some organizations never receving the form due to technical difficulties on CollegiateLink.
