Things You Should Know Before You Drink

In college, we all make decisions and whether or not they are good ones. With National College Alcohol Awareness Week approaching (Oct.16-22) and Oktoberfest coming up this weekend, it is important to get some facts about alcohol out there for you to be safe. This article will discuss the health related factors with alcohol consumption and its impact on you and your health.

What is a serving size of most alcoholic drinks?

The serving sizes are as follows:

4-5 ounces of wine About 100 calories per serving 10 ounces of wine cooler About 168 calories per serving 12 ounces of beer About 146 calories per serving 1.25 ounces of distilled liquor (80 proof whiskey, vodka, or rum) About 97 calories per serving On top of the high caloric content of alcoholic drinks, there are also  calories in mixers. Some of the most common mixers yield a substantial amount of calories. Drinks such as soda (about 130 per 12 ounce can of soda), juices (about 122 calories for 8 ounces), and sweet tea (about 150 calories for 16 ounces) are all high in calories and sugar, but yet they are used most times for mixers and chasers. So next time you can think about what you are drinking.

What are some factors that influence your blood alcohol content?

Gender It takes fewer drinks for females to get drunk compared to males. Type of drink consumed and timing of drinks The faster you drink, the faster it hits you, remember to sip your drinks not chug them; you do not want to end your night at 10pm or in the hospital. Weight The less you weigh, the more alcohol will effect you Sleep The less sleep you have, the more likely you are to get drunk quicker. Medications Some medications enhance the effects of alcohol Food Drinking on an empty stomach is the worst way to go. It's commonly believed to eat carbohydrates before drinking, however, meals high in protein will help absorb and process alcohol better. Remember eating before drinking is important! Never drink on an empty stomach. Physical Condition Always remember: the legal drinking age is 21 years old, and if you are under this age you should not be drinking alcohol. If you choose to partake in drinking activities than there could be some negative consequences, such as underage possession and consumption, which can both land you in a load of trouble. Don't forget: even if you are 21 years old, you can get in trouble for public intoxication, so be on your best wise when you drink!

Follow these safe drinking tips:

Sip don't chug Have no more than 1 drink an hour Eat before you drink Alternate with non-alcoholic drinks to help absorption Do not mix alcohol with other drugs, legal or illegal Do not fall into peer pressure of drinking Know your own limits If the situation is out of control LEAVE
