The Options Are Endless at Flip Flops

While Farmville isn't exactly known for its exotic cuisine and diversity in food options, there is a new joint in town full of nothing but variety. Flip Flops, located in the building formerly known as the Wing Shack, is a self-serve frozen yogurt shop with unique flavors and toppings.

Owners Brian Eckert and Bob Burke developed the concept for Flip Flops this summer. "It all came together very quickly," said Burke. "We saw some frozen yogurt places and the idea sparked our interest. We decided it was something the town of Farmville needed and we had the resources to start the business."

Upon entering Flip Flops, one is not only greeted by a trail of brightly-colored flip-flops, but with bright flashes of orange, pink, green and yellow. "We tried to find colors that went well with the name," Burke said.

Eckert's wife deserves the credit for Flip Flops' name. "Once she came up with the name, we formed the rest of the concept around it," said Burke. In addition to the floor décor and the neon paint, vivid photographs of people wearing—what else?—flip-flops adorn the walls.

The interior design of Flip Flops is elaborate, but what about the product itself? The flavors can vary, but the shop normally offers Original Tart, Strawberry Banana, Red Velvet Cake, New York Cheesecake, Peanut Butter, and Vanilla (no sugar added) frozen yogurt, just to name a few options.

Flip Flops currently provides several new flavors for a limited time, including Thin Mint, Georgia Peach, Strawberry, Country Vanilla, Watermelon Sorbet, and Pomegranate Raspberry Tart.

Flip Flops wouldn't be a frozen yogurt bar without all of the toppings. Customers can cover their frozen yogurt with various fruits, graham crackers, cookie dough bites, gummy worms, Fruit Loops, sunflower seeds, etc. They also provide chocolate fudge, mallo cream, caramel syrup and more.

Overall, Flip Flops has a variety of options that could satisfy even the pickiest of customers. Farmville was in dire need of affordable frozen treat options besides Dairy Queen or McDonald's. The atmosphere is pleasant and the service is quick and friendly. While some may compare the frozen yogurt bar to chains such as Sweet Frog, the unique décor and revolving flavor options help Flip Flops stand out.

While Flip Flops first opened on Sept. 4, the official opening has yet to come. "The grand opening should be within a few weeks," Burke said.

Flip Flops has already had a fair amount of advertising. The Flip Flops Facebook page already has 1,000 fans and counting. "We have done most of our advertising through Facebook," said Burke. A Flip Flops representative was at the Rock the Block event on Sept. 16 as well.

Burke said he hopes Flip Flops is a business both "the university and Farmville residents embrace." Eckert and Burke expect to expand to Charlottesville, Lynchburg and Richmond if the Farmville location is successful.

Flip Flops is open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday- Thursday, 11 a.m.-12 a.m. Friday-Saturday, and 12 p.m.-9 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, visit the official Flip Flops Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Flip-Flops-Farmville-Va/#!/pages/Flip-Flops-Farmville-Va/109888055777074
