Every semester students pack into Jarman Auditorium to witness LipSync, a show put on by various fraternities and sororities. "This is an opportunity for fraternities and sororities to showcase singing and dancing ability. In some cases it is also a chance to showcase new members," said Susan Sullivan, director of student union and activities.
Sigma Sigma Sigma took home best costumes for their sailor outfits as part of a Sophisticated S Club 7 routine. These ladies played a variety of songs ranging from "Womanizer" by Britney Spears, "Candyman" by Christina Aguilera, "I Don't Like Your Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne, and "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani. They brought out some shimmies and cartwheels to add to their show.
"LipSync gave me the opportunity to get very close with my pledge class. I felt that we learned a lot about each other from the many practices we had, and we also helped each other grow in so many different ways," said freshman Lauren Munnerlyn "My favorite memory from LipSync was right after we got off stage. When we heard the sisters cheering for us and got back to our seats to have them tell us how we did and how proud they were, that is what made it all worth it." she added.
Alpha Delta Pi won best dance for their rock-inspired act. They wore black shorts and lime green T-shirts with rips. They brought out lots of rock songs, along with some backwards rolls and other dance moves. "Rock Your Body" by Justin Timberlake, "I Love Rock and Roll," "Party Like a Rock Star," "So What" and "We Will Rock You" by supplied the background music. They ended with "Let It Rock" and Uncle Kracker's "Drift Away.""The majority of the chapter is kept in the dark about everything. It makes it so much more fun that way; we truly are surprised when we go out there to watch them. I think the best part about LipSync is finally getting to see what they have worked so hard to put together, the surprise of it," said senior Tara Coney.
"My favorite memory of the night is right as we were about to go on and we were backstage whisper-chanting and cheering each other on. I don't think we've ever smiled that much at one time." said sophomore Erica Lester.
Theta Chi took home most proud involvement. They were wearing hoodies and athletic pants. The group danced to "Green Light" by John Lennon accompanied with pelvic thrusts, and then ripped their pants off. They ended with "She Knows" by Justin Timberlake and "Right Round" by Flo Rida.
Alpha Sigma Alpha won best theme, with a circus theme. All of the sisters wore black tights, white tops, black vests and top hats. They danced to "Show Stopping" by Dainty Kane, "Circus" by Britney Spears, "Put On" by Young Jeezy, "Krazy" by Pitbull and a Lil Wayne remix.
"The hardest part of LipSync was having everyone put in their ideas and work on it together, but it's the part that brings you together the most. Learning to communicate and accept other people's opinions is a really good lesson to learn, especially for a new pledge class," said freshman Kelsey Ann Ranger.
Delta Zeta won best overall for women's division, wearing pink T-shirts, black shorts, leg warmers and red heels. They danced to "Lip Gloss" by Lil Mama and "Ladies' Night" by Keith Sweat. They broke out the roller blades during "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga. Some cheerleading tricks came out and they ended with "Independent" by Webbie and "Love" by Ashlee Simpson.
Sigma Nu took home best overall for the men. They kept it simple with hoodies and jeans. They started with "Swagga Like Us" by T.I., then moved on to the heartwarming "My Girl" by the Temptations. They got the crowd going with Mud on the Tires" by Brad Paisley and "Redneck Woman" by Gretchen Wilson, and were even manly enough to break out a little Miley Cyrus with "See You Again."
Last week's LipSync was the final one for the semester, but the event will return next semester, greatly anticipated by the Greek community and the student body.
