The Longwood men's rugby team dropped its first game of the season Saturday at First Avenue field. The rainy day turned out to be bright for Virginia Tech as they won 25-12 over the league-leading LU team. Ben Adams scored the only try for Longwood as VT went out to 15-5 halftime lead. Longwood started to make a strong comeback in the second half on a score and conversion by Erik Shupp and Chris Davis to close the score to 15-12. Then a series of penalties, an ejection and superb kicking by the Tech fullback allowed the Hokies to score 10 unanswered points and take the game by a final score of 25-12.
Even with the loss the Lancers will stay atop the Virginia Rugby Union standings. The team clinched the regular season champion last week and has the #1 seed headed to the playoff this weekend in Richmond. The men's and women's teams will travel
to play the Virginia Rugby Union semifinals on Saturday at Pole Green Park near Richmond. Games are at 10:45 a.m. for the men and 12:45 p.m. for the women. Visit Longwoodrugby.org for details and more information.
