What do you get when you combine 14 Greek organizations, Stepping in Unity and a packed house of screaming and singing students in Jarman Auditorium? You've got the annual Lip Sync show, a favorite tradition at Longwood. The pledge classes of the various sororities and fraternities compete in a crazy and hilarious show for best overall performances and appearances. The classes make their own dance routines to various mixes of music, which are kept completely secret from their organizations until the classes are on stage performing in front of everyone. The judging panel consisted of Assistant Professor of Sociology Jake Milne, Senior Computer Systems Engineer Greg Tsigaridas, Lecturer in Communication Studies Naomi Johnson-Tsigaridas and Associate Professor of Exercise Science Cathy Roy, along with student senior Courtney Lanier. The judges rated each performance in four categories: appearance, actual performance, Panhellenic spirit and overall thought.
All of the performances were hilarious and
well-received by the audience. Alpha Delta Pi was up first with their "Nine Oh So Fine" girls. Kappa Delta had the "Girls in Diamonds and Pearls" of fall 2008. Then Theta Chi put on a fantastic, funny show with their five pledges.
Zeta Tau Alpha was up next with a peace and love theme. Then, Delta Zeta's theme was "Riding with the DZs." Sigma Nu followed and their seven pledges did not disappoint. Sigma Kappa put on a show with "Sigma Kay's Anatomy" starring their 10 fall 2008 pledges.
After Sigma Kappa, the 12 very talented ladies representing Stepping in Unity took the stage and put on a fantastic performance that received high praise from the audience.
Alpha Gamma Delta's theme was "Glamorous," just like their pledges. Phi Kappa Tau was up next, and the stunt work their two pledges performed amazed the crowd.
Sigma Sigma Sigma caused a "Sigmalution" presented by the "heart stopping, jaw droppin', thrillin' 13," the biggest pledge class of any Greek organization this semester. Alpha Sigma Phi got the crowd rocking with the antics of their four fabulous pledges.
Alpha Sigma Alpha was next with their "flies high" theme and "Heaven 11" pledges. Sigma Phi Epsilon got the crowd on its feet with the talents of their two pledges. Alpha Sigma Tau performed next with their "First Class with AST" of seven pledges.
The music mixes were as diverse as the pledge classes themselves. They lip synced everything from Tim McGraw's "I Like It, I Love It" to "Mamma Mia!" to even the Backstreet Boys and other popular songs from every genre and decade imaginable. The song choices received outbursts of screaming and waves of singing along from the excited and amazed audience. Not only was the music impressive, but the classes' dance moves and stunt work were incredible and got harder to top with every performance. There were cartwheels, tons of flips, group push ups and lots of other moves that would amaze a professional cheerleading squad.
After AST, the National Panhellenic Council (NPHC) got the opportunity to perform in front of the crowd with their traditional "Greek Party Hop," as well as their organization's call and traditional step. The hosts gave the audience some of the history of the NPHC before the four Longwood organizations took the stage. First up was Alpha Phi Alpha. Next were the lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha, followed by Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta. Their calls and steps were high spirited and well received by the crowd.
Finally, the moment that everyone had been waiting for: the awards. This year Greek Affairs was able to purchase trophies for the big awards and certificates for the smaller categories. The first award was for "Best Dance Routine," which was given to Sigma Sigma Sigma. "Best Appearance" went to Alpha Sigma Alpha. Next, "Most Panhellenic" was awarded to Delta Zeta. The "Most Comedic" award went to Theta Chi. Finally; the big awards with the trophies were given. The "Best Male Overall" went to Theta Chi, and the "Best Overall Female" award went to Sigma Sigma Sigma.
Lip Sync is always an entertaining event where the pledge classes of the Greek organizations get to show their talents and comedic abilities. This Longwood tradition is sure to keep bringing back huge crowds for years to come.
