Sorority Recruitment Comes to a Happy Finale with Girl’s Walk

On Sunday, Jan. 22 at 5 p.m. behind Lankford Student Union, a new crop of 123 Longwood girls ran toward a sorority that offered them a bid. After a long recruitment weekend, each girl was finally able to discover which sorority welcomed them into their sisterhood.

  • Headphones What? I Can’t Hear You ... Oh Wait, Yes I Can: Headphone Disco

I know you like to dance. When you're alone is probably when you truly dance your heart out, the music blaring and no one there to judge your dorky left footedness. Lancer Productions provided a way for Longwood to take our inner dancer public and become a part of "the silent party phenomenon."

On Saturday, Jan. 21, Longwood's first ever Headphone Disco filled Dorrill Dining Hall's (D-Hall) Nance Room with a peculiar new form of clubbing. "From the UK to Uganda," the silent disco has become a hit, where dancers are given "two-channel wireless headphones and have two DJs broadcast to them over two FM channels simultaneously," according to the Lancer Productions website.

  • Student 2 Student Program at Play in Admissions

Advertised as a program set up to boost Longwood University's recruitment, volunteering students were "asked to do one or more of the following: return to their high school during winter and/or spring break, sign postcards, participate in phonations, have lunch with a prospective student or host a prospective student overnight," as stated in Longwood's Weekly Email. The Student 2 Student Program took place this winter break.

Students interested in the Student 2 Student program were also advised to contact Assistant Director of Admissions for Out of State Tracy Debner, providing their "name, email address, major, year (e.g. freshman, sophomore, junior, senior), former high school and [preferred volunteer work]" over email. Some contacts were also made directly to the students from the office, asking for involvement with the program.

  • Don't Let This Year Be Like Every Other

Whether your New Year's resolution is to lose weight, hit the gym, eat better, pick up running or "get big" (i.e., gain muscle mass), this is the time of the year where those New Year's resolutions get tossed to the sideaside and forgotten about. How can you stick to your New Year's resolutions without giving up?

  • FOREIGN CORRESPONDENCE: My First Days in Valencia

Jamie Clift, The Rotunda's longtime features editor, is studying abroad in Valencia, Spain at the Institute of Spanish Studies during the spring 2012 semester. Having stepped down from her position as features editor for the time being, Jamie Clift has charitably taken it upon herself to assume the role as The Rotunda's official Foreign Correspondent. In doing so, she will document her traveling experiences as an exchange student in each issue of The Rotunda.)

  • SDIC Hosts 'Citizen King' and 'X-Men: The Last Stand'

On Wednesday, Jan. 18 and Thursday,

Jan. 19 at 8 p.m., the Longwood Student Diversity and Inclusion Council (SDIC) hosted two screenings in Wygal Auditorium to a small, but involved audience. The first film, "Citizen King," depicted the career of Martin Luther King Jr. and his supporters in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during their fight for civil rights for African Americans in the United States.

After a short interlude that forecasts the inevitable death of King, the film starts with King's activism in Birmingham and explains the difficulties of working in a city that had witnessed numerous atrocities against blacks. These included 50 unsolved bombings and a case in which an innocent black man was caught on the street by a mob of angry Caucasians and castrated.

  • The Black Column: Motivation: If Not for Me, Then …

Hello and welcome back to another of what I am hoping will be a great semester at Longwood University! This semester, The Rotunda's Black Column will look a little different.  During my time at Longwood, I have always wanted to write and have my ideas published.  After talking to the lovely Jessica Stone, she agreed to allow me to help co-write this column that she has done such an excellent job with. It is my hope that these articles and ideas will challenge your thoughts, educate you on various issues and entertain you as well.  So with that being said, I would like to move on and give you all a little something about me as an introductory piece.

  • Dogs: A (Wo)Man’s Best Friend

My family has always been a dog family. When I was first born, we had Crystal. My dad bought her when he was in his 20s. We put her down before I was even a year old, so I have no memories of her.

  • What I would give to be on Winter Break Right Now

I would love to start school on Aug. 1. Not because I can't wait for summer to be over, but because I would love to finish the semester at Thanksgiving. Being home all holiday season would have many benefits that I would take full advantage of. Although, I trust that our schedule has been planned with good reason. In fact, most other schools in Virginia follow a similar calendar. I am sure there are many positive factors that contribute to the calendar the way it is.

  • Mieke Elkington Basketball Struggles to Compete and Win Games

The Longwood men's basketball team lost at Eastern Kentucky University last Sunday 78-71. The Lancers held a 46-35 lead early in the second half of action, but were swept aside by a 17-10 Colonels run during closing minutes.

  • Perseverance (Finally) Pays Off

Excitement coupled with relief. That's the general feeling on campus in the wake of Monday's announced move to the Big South Conference for 13 of 14 Longwood athletic programs. Conference affiliation at one time seemed far out of reach, so much so that I never thought I would see it in my time at Longwood University.

  • In Case You Missed It: While students are away, athletes still play

A lot happened in Longwood athletics while students were away on winter break. Here's a recap:

  • Brothers Busch Need the Off-Season to Reflect and Rethink

There are no two more polarizing figures in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series than Kyle and Kurt Busch. Both have their own legions of fans who gobble up merchandise left and right and show up at the racetrack each weekend to show their support for their favorite drivers. They also have multitudes of detractors who shower them with boos, jeers and the occasional middle finger. Don't get me wrong, both Kyle and Kurt are extremely talented behind the wheel. They both have double digit victories in the Sprint Cup series. Kyle alone has over 100 wins combined in Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series competitions. He's only 26. Kurt won the Sprint Cup championship in 2004.

  • Mens BBall Men’s Basketball Opens Season 1-1

The Longwood Lancers men's basketball team dropped their home opener against Navy on Friday 78-70. In a back and forth battle that featured 22 lead changes, the Midshipmen used a 15-7 run to break a 63-63 tie with 5:30 remaining en route to their first victory of the season. Navy converted nine of 10 free throws during the run including 7-8 by Brennan Wyatt.
